Pro Tips

from the TYME team!

1. Your knuckles should rotated from being seen in the mirror, to the wall behind you. The more you rotate, the tighter the curl will be.

2. The angle you hold your iron at will make a difference in the type of curl you create. A vertical angle will create a more closed, lean curl, whereas, a horizontal angle will create an open, voluminous curl.

3. Where hair cools is where it stay! As you're finishing each curl, catch and twirl the hair. It will help the curl form better and last longer. Make sure the twist is in the same direction as the curl.

4. We have spent years creating tutorials to make your life easier! Stop all the guessing and check out our Learning Center for more videos and tutorials!

Common Mistakes

Tension

Applying tension can do all of those annoying things like crimping or tugging at the hair strand. Unlike other heated tools, The TYME Iron doesn’t curl by using tension to your hair. Your plates should never have to meet, and your hair should glide through like silk!

Holding It Correctly

Pick the iron up with your thumb behind the power button, and your fingers on the side with the temperature lights. Whether you’re curling or straightening, you will always hold the TYME Iron this way!

Rotating The Right Direction

Start with your fingertips facing in towards your head (refer to step 3 ). Rotate the iron back towards the back of the room so you can see the curved side of the iron in the mirror. Maintain the angle as you glide through the hair.

Prep & Foundations

When we say “Forget everything you know about curling”, we mean it! If you’re used to using hairspray or oil before curling with your previous tools, that is now a thing of the past! For best results, apply a lightweight thermal protectant before curling, and that’s it! (We love Upstaged Thermal Protectant)

Curl At The Top

Since you are starting at the top of the hair strand with the TYME Iron curling technique, we recommend pulling your section slightly forward towards the mirror. This allows you to get right up at the root with the iron (don’t be scared to go all the way to the scalp, since there is a barrier on the curling side of the iron!) From there, rotate the iron back right away before you start sliding down the hair strand. The more you rotate back, the more curl you will achieve!

Curls Matching

This iron listens to you as well as a computer! That being said, making sure you’re mirroring your angle, rotation, and direction on both sides is key to getting your curls to match.

Pro Tip: If you create a curl that you love on one side, draw a line with a dry erase marker or lipstick on the mirror that reflects where your iron was when you were curling. Then, draw a line that connects at the top of the first line, creating the look of a triangle without the bottom line. Use this line for curling on the other side of your head. Match your iron up to these lines every time you curl until you get the hang of it!

Curls Lasting All Day

There are many factors to this question, but to put it as simply as possible, make sure everything you do prior to curling is working FOR you!

Using heavy or oily products before curling will only weigh down your curls, so we recommend only applying a light weight thermal protectant prior to curling.

Slide down the hair strand at an even, slow pace to allow your hair to properly heat and cool, setting in the curl.

Avoid “raking” or brushing out your curls before they feel cool to the touch. Where hair cools is where it stays!

Hair Type/Length (Extensions)

D. All Of The Above! ;) The TYME Iron curls from top to bottom, allowing it to work on any hair length past 1”. It also smooths as it curls, so it works on any hair texture from stick straight to 4B curls! Make slight changes to tension and speed for best results for your hair type.

Left Handed

Long story short, yes you can! That being said, we suggest trying to curl with the right handed method first. 90% of our left handed customers prefer the right handed technique! Schedule a StyleTYME session to learn either technique with one of our virtual stylists, or check out this video for more guidance!
