Debunking 9 Hair Care Myths For Visibly Healthier Hair
Read Time: 4min 16 sec
Hair is a tool we use to define ourselves, whether culturally or individually. It's ours and belongs to us. We get so fixated on it being perfect (especially in America, but that's a conversation for another time). In each of our journeys to "having better hair," we've probably taken to the internet, a group of trusted girlfriends, or our original teachers, our moms, to try and figure out how to tame our strands.
Every person's hair journey is theirs, and we think that's something extraordinary. (I mean, let's be honest, how often do we get to spend time worrying about just ourselves these days.) However, there are a few hair truths we know that hold up for nearly every head and will help you learn how to take care of your hair.
#1 - Your hair requires moisture.
#2 - Brush from the bottom and work your way up before you start styling (curly-haired girls, you're included)
Keeping those two crucial factors in mind, here are a few hair myths we can't stop thinking about and what you actually should be doing to take care of your hair.
"I have to wash my hair every day because it gets greasy."
Quick answer: Your "greasy hair" actually needs more moisture.
But, there are a lot of factors that go into how often you should wash your hair. The main one, though, is hygiene. It would be best if you always strived for a clean scalp. However, washing your hair every two to three days is perfectly fine. It may even give you some unbelievable results that you didn't know where possible. If you want to get into the weeds on why your scalp gets so oily so quickly, we suggest starting with our 30 Day Washing Challenge.
"Curls only last on dirty hair."
Quick answer: Curls last on hydrated hair.
Don't get us wrong, dirty hair has its advantages, but ultimately, hydrated hair will always hold a curl. Opt for a shampoo conditioner duo that focuses on how your hair performs rather than looks. The best-kept secret in hair is that well-hydrated hair will always have that healthy, shiny look.
"Conditioner weighs my hair down."
Quick answer: You might be using too much conditioner.
Not all conditioners are made the same. Some companies focus on what we call the "early 2000's hair commercial" hair, meaning they only care about shine and silk…but that's not reality. Some people have thicker, coarser hair, and we think it's detrimental to put a potentially damaging expectation on hair. So how can you condition your hair without weighing it down? Use a conditioner that focuses on strong moisturized hair AND can be used at the root. Let's be honest the equation for voluminous hair starts with a moisturized scalp + moisturized hair.
If you're hesitant about the results, don't be afraid to start small. A quarter size of conditioner can get you far.
"Heat is bad for your hair."
Quick answer: Too much heat is bad for your hair.
Think about the desert…now the two types of desert. They're both dry, but their environments make them completely different. The cracked desert you are thinking of is exposed to too much heat, while the other is hot but not that hot. Products can only do so much. When you apply too much heat, what happens to hair is a complete depletion of moisture. Over-drying and over-styling are pulling too much water out.
How do you avoid heat damage? First and foremost, invest in products that promote moisture and heat protection. Learning how to blow dry your hair to close the cuticle properly can make a huge difference. But ultimately, applying less heat is the answer. That's where TYME comes in. We've built a line of products that promote healthy hair that performs well and the TYME Iron that only needs to be used once every wash cycle.
"My hair only grows in the back."
Quick answer: All of your hair follicles grow at the same rate.
Don't be this girl. Your hair grows at the same rate, BUT people tend to apply heat around the front face-framing areas of their hair, damaging it consistently, making for broken strands that just aren't as long as the rest.
"I don't want to get my hair cut; I'm trying to grow it out."
Quick answer: You should look into dusting cuts!
The easiest way to grow out your hair is to make sure it's healthy and moisturized. Healthy hair tends to grow quickly. You may need to look at your overall hair health (how often you apply heat, your drying methods, etc.) and not just your cutting habits to achieve the length you want. Talk with your hairstylist about your hair goals because the type of cut they give you right now may be hindering your end goals, and no one wants to endure that awkward hair length stage.
"Hairspray your hair before curling to make them last longer."
Quick answer: Unless it's a working hair spray (and says it on the bottle), do not do this.
There are some powerful working hairsprays out in the world, but honestly, the best way to make curls last longer is by having hydrated hair. Moisturized hair performs best, especially when it comes to heat-treated styles. Before blowdrying and curling, use a strong thermal protectant, and let your freshly curled hair cool in place before brushing through it.
"I have to straighten before curling."
Quick answer: Opt for a blowout instead.
Think of a slinky…take a slinky out of its shape, and then try to force it back into shape… that's a really hard task! The same applies to your hair. You're stretching the strands to their limit and doubling the reduction of hydrogen bonds (aka moisture) in your hair, so it's not going to shape into the curl as well as you'd like it. We recommend blowdrying your hair toward a straighter style and then curling.
“I have a cabinet full of hair care products, and I’m still not getting the results.”
Quick answer: Get products that work together to promote hydrated hair. Not sure where to start? Our blog on curl activators for lasting hydration and definition is a great place to begin.

Our 6-Step Guide To Winter Hair Care
Read Time: 2 min 44 sec
We’re slowly feeling the effects of winter. Living in an area that experiences temperature and weather extremes has us familiar with adding or removing a few steps to the “getting ready” process as the seasons change. As a Midwest-based company, we’re no strangers to the idea of layers, having at least a quarter-full tank, and adding oil to our skin-care regiment to beat the harsh temperatures.
Having healthy hair all year long is the norm for some people, but for those who have ebbing and flowing relationships with our hair, taking special care of our hair in the winter is vital to a year-round shine. Here’s our winter hair care guide to healthier locks (and glowing skin) in the midst of winter.
1. Scream it with us, “Moisturize!”
Winter air lacks any moisture, which leaves your skin and hair feeling the same way: dry! A frizz and static-free winter starts with moisturized hair. Keeping a healthy shine throughout the winter has everything to do with your washing routine and the products you’re using in your routine. A good shampoo and conditioner duo will work to gently clean your hair and provide moisture, but a great shampoo and conditioner, however, will do both of those things while working to promote healthy hair follicles and protect your hair cuticle from outside stressors. Adding protective and moisturizing products to your styling routine (on top of a stellar shampoo and conditioner) will elevate your hair’s water retention ten-fold.
P.s. Winter is the perfect time to work on extending your wash cycle. Grab your favorite beanie and start here.
2. Drink even more water.
There’s nothing quite like the glow of a healthy body. Winter weather brings on a great opportunity to look at your overall health and how your everyday routine can bring on a new definition of wellness. Meeting those daily water intake goals and adding an array of different vitamins to your diet will help replenish your body from the inside out and bring a new level of moisture to your skin and hair.
3. Clean it up.
Damaged ends grow upward. Stop them in their tracks by giving your hair a new breathe of life with a cut. Staying up-to-date on a regular cut (or trim) cycle will help elevate your hair health. If a trim sounds intimidating or doesn’t fall in line with your hair goals, opt for a dusting cut to tame flyaways and split-end growth.
AND clean your brushes! (Or just buy new ones;) ) Product build-up on your brushes can affect your overall scalp health and act as an absorbent, pulling all your freshly applied product out of your hair.
4. Make friends with cold showers.
When stylists and hair industry professionals talk about heat, we’re not limiting it to heat that comes from a machine. While using a thermal protectant should always be a must in your styling routine, the potential of heat damage starts before that.
Let’s be honest, hot showers are one of the finer things in life but not necessarily the friendliest when it comes to our hair. Washing with warmer temperature water is perfectly fine, but rinsing out conditioner in a cold shower will help close the hair cuticle, ensuring all that moisture-giving product is locked in.
Your skin will thank you, too.
5. Be Gentle with Yourself
Your hair experiences so much stress throughout the winter. Take extra time when brushing through it, and always make sure to start from the ends of your hair and work your way up. A few of our favorite tricks to avoid unnecessary tangles include:
Clipping your hair back or tucking it into the back of your jacket/coat, so it doesn’t get caught up in the maze of layers
Brushing before you get in the shower to avoid that dreaded mid-shower tear through (we’ve all been there before)
6. Simplify Your Routine
Protecting your hair and giving it its best life doesn’t have to be complicated. Focus on these key pieces:
Wash and condition with moisture-promoting products
Use products that focus on long-lasting results
Tidy up damaged locks every chance you get.
Clean your brushes
Take care of yourself

The Five Brushes To Crush Your Hair Health Goals
Read Time: 3 min 57 sec
Choosing the right brush is just as important as choosing the right hair care product or heat-styling tool. All brushes are not created equal; they are designed for specific hair types, lengths, needs, and desired style results. Investing in a quality brush (or more, depending on how many styles you want to create and your hair needs!) will change the landscape of your hair, and your locks and scalp will thank you for it. Not sure how to choose a brush that’s right for you? Well, depending on what you are looking for (volume, lift, smooth texture, etc.), we’ve outlined each brush below, from what it does, what type of hair will benefit from using it, and what kind of results you can expect.
Detangler Hair Brush
The Detangler Brush is here to save your scalp and hair from the typically uncomfortable process of getting rid of tangles and snarls. This little luxury is a great tool to get rid of snags and snarls. Its unique, curved shape gets close to your scalp, gently massaging and exfoliating even the most sensitive scalp. Boar and nylon bristles catch every strand of hair and distribute natural oils and products for healthy, lustrous shine without frizz or flyaways. A non-slip, comfortable grip handle allows for easy manipulation, and the vented design provides maximum airflow between your dryer and hair, speeding up that dry time.
Some customer love:
“It’s easy on the hair. This brush is perfect!”“I love how it feels when I brush my hair.”“The best brush to help detangle and so comfortable to hold.”
3” Round HairbrushSo much more than a traditional round brush, ours is designed with two types of bristles: nylon and boar. Gentle boar bristles will flow through hair, while nylon bristles will hold your hair in place as you are styling and drying. A quick cool shot from your BlowTYME dryer, directly on the hair section held by the brush barrel, will add some extra body and hold. This 3-inch Round Brush will create lift at the root and add volume and body to ends and length, whether your hair is short, shoulder-length, or long. The comfort grip is easy on the wrists and hands when rolling and drying hair sections.
Some customer love:“I can blow out my curly hair to straight very quickly!”“This brush does what it says and makes my hair super soft.”“I’ve had many brushes, but this one is the best.”
Triangle BrushThis small brush delivers big results! Its unique, triangular shape helps grab short hair without pulling for easy styling. Perfect for creating volume and to round-out ends on pixie, bob, or long layered hairstyles. The Triangle Brush is great for adding lift to roots and styling layers that frame your face, too! The flat edges of this brush work perfectly to pick up hair and create extra body and smooth hair, while the non-slip comfort grip makes styling quick and easy. The Triangle Brush is a great tool to use to style fringe, face frame, or create a more curly style on long hair!
Some customer love:“A great alternative to a round brush, great for volume.”“I use this brush on my daughter’s thin hair!”“I just cut my hair from long to short, and this fits right against my head, gives me the lift I need.”
Paddle BrushThis Paddle Brush is an excellent tool for any hair type! Another of our professional salon-grade accessories, its wider paddle shape covers a larger area when brushing shorter and longer hair. Its soft cushiony design and flexible nylon bristles work together to reach and massage the scalp while brushing through more dense hair. When blow-drying or heat styling, the flat surface area delivers a smoother, straighter style. The non-slip comfort grip lets you control your styling experience. Gently brushing your hair has even been said to reduce stress levels, and this is the brush to do it!
Some customer love:“I love the simplicity of this brush, simple yet so effective!”“We have three in the house, one for me, one for my daughter, one for travel.”“I like it for my tender head and sensitive scalp.”
More Benefits:
Made with heat-resistant bristles that won’t melt or break while styling.
Magnetic handles! All brushes have magnetic tips so that you can hang them from most metal surfaces. Saves on clutter and frees up counter and drawer space.
Shampoo Brush
We have deemed this palm-sized brush our little manicure saver. The Shampoo Brush is great for a scalp massage both in and out of the shower, as regular scalp massages rid hair of buildup and debris and are great for circulation and overall hair health. The thick silicone bristles reach through your hair to meet your scalp for an invigorating but gentle massage. Using the Shampoo Brush regularly will stimulate the pores on your scalp, boost blood flow, exfoliate dead skin cells and clear the oil glands, giving your hair follicles a lift straight from the root.
Some customer love: “Amazing product. Something I never thought I would need now is a must-have.”“I had no idea how much tension my scalp was holding there until I used this tool.”“Works well and feels great!”
Maintenance:Keep brushes free of hair, removing excess each time you use them. The average life of a brush used every day is up to a year, depending on hair length and type. Replace your brushes as needed to keep your hair looking healthy and feeling amazing!

Creating The Perfect Morning Routine With CEO Jacynda Smith
Read Time: 3 min 52 sec
There are no one-size-fits-all when it comes to routines, especially morning routines. While there are some “influencers” and “fitness gurus” who might claim they have the best morning routine, which really is just a regimented schedule that fits into their lifestyle...it is quite simply just not true.
None of our days look exactly the same (ok, moms, we see you, just keep reading!), and frankly trying to adhere to a strict schedule is kind of setting yourself up for failure. We’re in the business of adding wins to your day, not L’s. Our CEO, Jacynda Smith, put together a few tips to help you beat the system and develop a perfect morning routine of your OWN.
#1 - Follow Your Excitement.
“Follow your excitement to the best of your ability with no insistence on the outcome.” - Bashar, Darryl Anka
This quote is number one for a reason. Of course, there are things in life that we don’t love doing...taking out the garbage, changing a dirty diaper, pumping gas, etc., but there are tasks that we love that we can put a focus on. We all get the same 24 hours in a day, so why not take one or maybe a handful to do the things we actually enjoy?
Ok moms, we still see you! We know your schedule is pretty much full and that if you did have an extra hour in the day, somehow it still wouldn’t be for you. Our proposition? Start including your babes in those little moments that you love. Not only will it give you a relief to start doing the things you love again, but can start the building blocks of a life-long that task for your child, too!
#1a - Find the things you don’t like doing in your schedule.
Sometimes this can be an easier first step. Don’t get us wrong, finding the good first is always the preferred step, but sometimes taking a step or two out can make a big difference. Not only are you creating the time and space to start doing the things you love, but it may even help you discover new things you love.
#2 - Every day does NOT have to look the same.
Mondays may be your long-haul days and Tuesdays may be hot yoga. Preparing for each of your days shouldn’t look the same, because your days don’t hold the same activities. Let’s be realistic, having the same schedule every single day is NOT fun. Are you a robot? We didn’t think so.
Setting strict, mundane parameters to your day eventually is going to wear on you, but maybe you need a little structure to your mornings to really get your day started. We applaud you for recognizing that and encourage you to find the little moments you love. Use them to romanticize your mornings and have better starts to each day.
#3 - S.I.M.P.L.I.F.Y.
Again, easier said than done. We know. BUT, there are little things you can do throughout the day to make things a little smoother.
Need to grab food for dinner? Take five minutes and order those items online for pick up at your local grocery store.
Spending too much on drive-thru coffee? Hit up Youtube and find out how to automatically start your coffee pot in the morning.
Hate getting ready in the morning? Invest in some products that make you feel put together, but only take a fraction of the time. For instance hair products formulated so you can wash your hair less AND your styles last longer….like TYME! ;)
Once you have identified your #1a items, find a way to make them easier. Marie Kondo your routine, girl!
#4 - Give yourself a daily treat.
We’re not talking cookies here. (But cookies are always welcome!) Whether we’re moms or badass CEOs or both, there is something we all love doing, something that fills our cup every day. For me, it's mediation. I love following Matías de Stefano’s guided meditations to combat the overwhelming nature of today’s world. It is so easy to get swallowed in the turbulence of social media and everything going on in the world, that getting the chance to be centered with myself is so strong. It helps me remember that I am enough.
Your treat doesn’t have to be meditation or food or some flamboyant task every day. Even the small things that you love like going for a solo walk or reading a book while everyone else is watching TV or even playing your favorite album from when you were 15 while cleaning today’s mess can make a huge difference in your outlook. It's all about falling in love with your life and where you’re at. We know it’s cheesy, but romanticizing the little things in life, really does add a base level of happiness to your everyday.
#5 - Give yourself space to learn and grow.
Read that again.
You can plan every single second of your day and somewhere along the way something isn’t going to go as planned. Give yourself structure, but don’t forget to allow yourself wiggle room to explore and try new things. You deserve it. The world is changing so quickly that we must remember to take time to appreciate what is here and now before it's gone.
You are the master of your morning routine. You know what goes into a morning that makes your day good or challenging, so only you can curate a perfect daily routine.
You got this!

Five Salon Terms to Learn Before Scheduling Your Next Appointment
Read Time: 3 min 39 sec
Let’s have a moment for our hairstylists. These incredible people bring an internal version of ourselves to the surface and leave us feeling fabulous. They deserve a national holiday, a cake, presents, the whole nine. Stylists spend years perfecting their craft and are continually educating themselves on the latest trends so that we can stay this gorgeous.
How can we make their lives a little bit easier? By learning their lingo.
The next time you are ready to make a huge life change (a.k.a. cut and/or color), keep these five things in mind when making your appointment.
Consultation
If you’re looking to take on a significant or first-time change, scheduling a consultation with your stylist will make a massive difference in the results! Your stylist can give you a more exact look into the time and dollar commitment your desired look will take during your consultation. PLUS, a ton of people get anxious when they sit down at the salon and make impulse decisions. These decisions can either teeter toward a stunning new look or...a not-so-great new look. Our suggestion is to schedule a consultation, even if it’s just a phone call.
Low vs. High Maintenance Color
There is a huge difference here, ladies! Knowing the difference in what type of color you want will completely change how to talk to your stylist and your at-home maintenance expectations.
Low Maintenance Color
We love hair color that has depth! If you’re looking to spice your hair up, low maintenance color is a perfect place to start. Keep in mind, your time in the salon will increase with any addition of color. However, your time commitment beyond the salon shouldn’t increase. This color addition should grow out nicely without the addition of color maintenance appointments.
There are two rules of thumb for people looking to add low maintenance color: (one) the color you’re adding should not stray far from your natural locks, and (two) you’re only coloring a fraction of your hair, not all of it.
High Maintenance Color
Don’t let the title intimidate you. We are here for high maintenance color! Platinum blondes, sassy reds, and pastel colors are absolutely stunning, but they do take a touch of extra work (that is every bit worth it). High maintenance colors typically take a few more hours and a few more dollars, but with the right at-home maintenance and regular appointments with your stylist, these looks can stay bold all year long!
Highlights
The world of highlights has changed a ton in the past decade. We would like to think for the better, but we’ll let future generations decide that! ;) Below are the three most common highlighting techniques and how they differ.
Balayage/Hair Painting
Say it with us: baa-luh-yaage. Balayage, or hair painting, quickly took over after some “ombre” looks weren’t entirely cutting it. This coloring process takes time (expect 2+ hours) as your stylist is literally painting color onto your hair, but it is oh so worth it. Balayage highlights are typically low maintenance since your roots are untouched and can grow with their natural color. If you’re opting for an ashy tone or bold color, be ready to leave the salon with an extra product or two to keep that color looking fresh.
Babylights/Weave highlights

Babylights are a stunning option when you’re looking to brighten up your overall hair color. They give a touch of dimension without the obviously highlighted look. Don’t be fooled by their low maintenance aesthetic though, babylights take time and precision to get right. If you’re going for an all-over look expect to be in the salon for more than three hours.
Pro Tip: If you’re looking to up your current balayage for a spring/summer look, adding babylights is the perfect way to it brighten up!
Face Framing/Money Piece
View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Beauty Launchpad (@beautylaunchpad)
Face framing highlights are EVERYTHING right now! While some kids on TikTok have taken it to the next level with bold colors, the everyday woman will feel fierce with these highlights. In this process, your stylist will section off along your hairline and use a hair painting technique to brighten these pieces. We suggest sticking to a color just a shade or two brighter than your natural color for an effortless looking pop!
Cut vs a Dusting cut
Ladies...let’s give our stylists a break. A cut is a cut. A trim takes the same amount of time and effort as a six-inch chop. We’ve found that typically when someone asks for a trim, they truly want a dusting cut. Typically people in need of a dusting cut love the way their hair is growing and want to keep it healthy. Whereas someone who wants a traditional cut is looking for a change in their look.
Layers
View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Beauty Launchpad (@beautylaunchpad)
Whether it’s no layers, choppy layers, or a full-on shag cut, layers completely change how any hairstyle looks on us. Before you demand graduated layers or a one-length cut, consider asking your stylist for their opinion. Stylists see good, bad, and fabulous hairstyles all day long, so you know that you can trust their judgment. ;) You would be shocked at how different layers can impact your everyday look.
Keep in mind, women with curly hair are looking for a completely different set of layers than women with straight hair!
Now that you have the basics, you can start collecting those inspiration pictures and let your stylist create life-changing looks! For more tips and hair tutorials, follow us on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest.
Manifesting Better Hair: ATCE Stages Of Hair Loss And Growth
Read Time: 3 min 19 sec
Haircare is so much more than we think. While a #selfcare moment featuring a hair mask and some leave-in-conditioner is beneficial to our locks and good for the soul, true haircare requires an understanding of how our hair functions.
All of the 100,000 hairs on our head go through the same four stages of growth: anagen, catagen, telogen, and exogen. (Is anyone else having flashbacks to high school biology class?) The time spent in these four stages will vary from person to person, as we know not all hair is created equal. However, having an understanding of how these stages affect your hair will give you a new perspective on how to treat your hair moving forward.
It’s important to note that every hair follicle in your head is on its own timeline.
Phase One: Anagen
You may have heard something along the lines of “hair texture changes every seven years,” and while that is not exactly true, there is a bit of truth behind that statement. At all times, about 90% of our hair is in the anagen phase, your hair’s growing stage. Each strand has a growing stage of three to five years. During these years our hair typically grows half an inch per month, however (if you’re lucky) some people may have genetically longer growing stages and their hair grows at a faster rate. We notice this phase over time, but it is most apparent after we get our hair cut, as strands in the anagen phase will quickly extend past the obvious trim line. Because the majority of our hair is in this stage at all times, it is vital that we consistently practice a healthy haircare routine.
Phase Two: Catagen
Consider the catagen phase a stage of puberty. It serves as the transitional period of a hair follicle’s life before it hits adulthood. During this phase, your hair follicle is shrinking in preparation for the last two phases and the new strand that will eventually emerge. Catagen typically only lasts a couple of weeks and is hardly recognizable.
Phase Three: Telogen
Your hair is l-i-t-e-r-a-l-l-y doing nothing for three months (wouldn’t that be nice) in the telogen phase. The hair follicle has reduced in size enough to still allow the hair to remain in place and allow for a brand new strand to begin growth. While this new strand of hair is beginning to develop, there are no visual changes to your hair.
Phase Four: Exogen
As one might have guessed, the exogen phase is when the hair exits the follicle. Daily we will lose, at most, 100 strands of hair. This phase can last up to five months, and while these numbers may seem alarming, please note that at any given time, your hair is consistently shedding up to 10% of its entirety. Once the hair has fallen out, the anagen phase begins and the cycle restarts.
If you live in a region that experiences frequent seasonal changes, your hair will adjust to these patterns. For example, your exogen phase may start in the summer, but the bulk of these hairs may release in the fall as the weather turns.
Caring For Your Hair Throughout These Cycles:
Because the majority of your hair spends most of its life in the anagen phase, giving your hair strong building blocks is the best way to care for it. This means basic solutions like taking vitamins, exercise (yes, it affects your hair growth), and reducing stress levels, but there are also a few more steps you can take to ensure your hair has the best chance of reaching maximum growth.
Shampoo and Conditioner
What you wash and nourish your hair with acts as a foundation. Shampoos and conditioners produced with empty ingredients and fillers will weigh your hair down and clog your hair follicles, reducing your growth opportunity. A good shampoo and conditioner will cleanse the scalp while providing enough moisture that your hair follicle can produce the oils it needs to benefit the hair strand. Find out more information on why this oil production is essential to a healthy head of hair here.
Stimulate Your Hair Follicles
That’s right ladies. Scalp massages aren’t just for TLC. Stimulated hair follicles are more active and therefore work harder to produce longer strands. We recently added a tool to our collection that will turn your shower into the healthy hair, mini-spa of your dreams.
Prevent Breakage
Think of hair damage the same way you would a hangnail. Drying it out or continuously bothering the hangnail will eventually make the damage work down to the nail bed. The same goes for hair. To prevent breakage from reaching the roots we suggest the following: Always use a heat protectant. Avoid the overuse of direct heat. Whenever you brush your hair, start with the bottom section and slowly work your way up to prevent any ripping or breakage.
Take care of those luscious locks regularly and in time, you will notice how differently it grows!

The Method to the Madness: Round Brushes Tried-And-True
Read Time: 2 min 45 sec
Want to know the secret to almost every Red Carpet, glorious 1970s, and Edward Cullen-Esque hairstyle? Round Brushes
These seemingly intimidating hair tools weren’t invented until the 1960s, but have made a powerful stance in the beauty industry since. Hairstylists all over the world keep round brushes close at hand because of the endless styles they can create when paired with a powerful blow dryer. From runway blowouts to voluminous pixie cuts and even silky straight hair, round brushes are a one-stop-shop for nearly every styling need. Our favorite part? They work with every hair type!
Mastering the use of a round brush does take a bit of practice, but Jacynda Smith, CEO of TYME has gathered the best tips to leave you feeling like you just walked out of the salon!
View this post on Instagram
A post shared by TYME Hair Products (@tyme) on Sep 10, 2020 at 1:26pm PDT
Ground Rules
Rule #1:
Always use a thermal protectant when applying heat to your hair. We suggest the Upstaged Thermal Protectant. It is essentially a mousse, detangler, thermal protectant, a hair mask, and a texturizer all in one!
Rule #2:
Round brushes come in at the end of your blow-drying time. Hair should be nearly 70% dry before you even pick up your round brush. Your hair should feel cool to the touch before you get started.
Rule #3:
Rotate. Rotate. Rotate. We don’t suggest trying to brush tangles out with a round brush! Round brushes are meant for styling, not brushing. Grab a small section you’re looking to style and place it over the brush. Gently rotate the brush through the length of your hair. Be cautious with larger section sizes because they are harder to maintain and run a greater risk of tangling together.
Rule #4:
Keep your blow dryer pointed away from your roots. Reversing that angle will fluff up your hair cuticle creating tons of frizz.
Creating Your Look
Much like the TYME Iron, the styles you create with a round brush depend greatly on angles! Except these angles come from your blow dryer. Where your blowdryer is placed is the ultimate factor in what style you’ll end up with. We suggest investing in a blowdryer that comes with a condenser like the BlowTYME Hairdryer.
Jacynda said it perfectly in the video above, “Where the hair cools is where it stays.” So if your hair is cooling on the curve of the rounded brush, it will have a curl or wave to it, but if it’s cooling without even touching the brush, it will be straight.
Check out our different TYME approved methods to creating these different looks. And just as a reminder, your round brush should stay at the same angle the entire time you’re styling to keep consistency. Turn the heat up on your blowdryer and let’s get to work!
Looking for Less Volume?
Keep your blow dryer on the inside angle of your round brush. In a gentle and steady motion, rotate (see Rule #3) the round brush through your locks. This method will give you a soft and straight style.
Au Natural?
Keep your blow dryer at a 90-degree intersection with your round brush for a more natural look. This look will still be smooth with a very slight lift and just a glimpse of your natural wave.
Just a Little Bit of Volume?
Keeping your blow dryer to the outside edge of your round brush will give you volume throughout the entirety of the section you’re blow-drying. This method is ideal before styling a polished look like glam waves or an updo.
The Most Volume?
To get a sky-high blowout you’ll want your blowdryer to be blowing your hair back towards you underneath the round brush. Be sure to follow the curve of the brush closely and gently rotate it through your hair. When you get to the end of your length, tightly wrap your hair back into the round brush. Now rotate your round brush 90 degrees and *gently* unwind your locks. Voila! You just took the first step in DIY-ing a gorgeous blowout!

Prepare! Prepare! Prepare!
This is the key to making this sleek look last. Prep your hair with Upstaged Thermal Protectant. Upstaged is a strong and long-lasting product that adds an incredible scent, protects your hair and can double as a lightweight styling aid. Make sure to brush this evenly through the entirety of your hair. The TYME Iron runs from 300 to 400 degrees and a higher temperature will help you get the desired look on the first pass through your hair. A singular pass at a higher temperature creates less damage than multiple passes with a lower temp. Don’t forget that!
Work Your Way Up!
Unlike most TYME styles, when working with thicker textured hair, we suggest sectioning. Working from the nape of your neck up to the crown will be the quickest, most effective method to straighten your hair. This will give you the opportunity to trial and error a few pieces underneath, while still giving them the time to cool before making any “corrections.”
Your Brush is Your Best Friend
Grab your Detangler Brush and let’s dive in! Our TYME brushes are designed to handle the heat coming from the iron, so you can seamlessly work with each tool. Using your brush as a guide to keep your curls sprawled out will ensure heat is distributed evenly through your section of hair.
Pro Tip: Give each section a thorough brush through before straightening! This will help ensure you won’t hit any snags when passing through with the iron.
Lock It Down!
After you’ve made it through all your curls, there are a few optional steps to keep that sleek shine. Grab a bottle of SelfieTYME Hairspray and use as much or as little hairspray as you like, our’s is chemically created to be touchably soft! The finishing touch? Our TYMELESS Repair and Shine Spray. It is literally liquid gold. Packed with tons of vitamins and proteins, TYMELESS will help lock in hydration, thus preventing your hair from humidity, static, and frizz.
Spend less time trying to create new looks and more time feeling your best. We would love to hear your results, so please share it with us on any of our platforms!

We want to brag on this beauty, with brains and benefits, for a second:
Technology – Ionic technology uses negative ions to disperse water molecules in hair so it dries faster and smoother.
Quiet – No jet engine noise! Our brushless motor keeps things quiet, so you can chat or watch YouTube videos as you style.
Comfort – Lightweight, plus an ergonomic handle you can grip easily without accidentally hitting buttons. Pop this puppy in your suitcase or gym bag!
Settings (3 heat / 2 speeds) – Personalize your heat and speed settings, whether on a time crunch or perfecting your style, using our brushes to straighten and smooth or add some beachy waves.
Cool shot – CEO Jacynda Smith says “The cool burst gives an extra shot of security, helping keep your style in place. I hit it all the time, when styling with our round brush.”
Bling embellishments – Rose gold buttons, logo placard and decorative air filter makes this blow dryer one you won’t want to put away.
Accessories – BlowTYME includes a concentrator nozzle to smooth and shine and a diffuser for natural curls and waves!
9-foot power cord – so you can style with ease and not be tied to the bathroom counter.
Loop to hang – Discreet loop allows you to hang dryer while storing. Super convenient!
When Jacynda Smith, CEO, and Founder of TYME, was asked why she made BlowTYME, she responded:
"I wanted to put everything in a blow dryer. I wanted it quiet, lightweight, powerful. All the things that a woman wants in a blow dryer, even though blow dryer manufacturers told me they didn't want it quiet because they'd keep looking for a higher speed. But I think everyone wants a quiet blow dryer, and a powerful one.I wanted to create a blow dryer that covered all the things that I felt weren't covered out there. It's so lightweight, you can compare it with your phone so that gives you a good idea without having to feel it. I wanted switches that didn't toggle on and off on accident when you were moving your hand around. Another feature I really wanted to add in was the cool shot. I really wanted to stay on so it stays on so you don't have to hold it while you're trying to blow dry. When I was a stylist, I was blow-drying hair and I went to change hands and a fireball shot out of the dryer. And the reason that happens is because brush motors build up particles and they shoot out particles. Brushless motors don't do that, and it's really great for women so that they never have to experience that.A lot of women question why the blow dryer comes with concentrator on. I used to take mine off until I learned how powerful and helpful a concentrator is. And what it does is it directs the airflow, so you can really have a perfect blow-dry. You aren't blow drying pieces that aren't supposed to be blow-dried at the same time. It pops right off and that way you can take it and switch it into the diffuser. The diffuser helps you enhance natural curl. You just scrunch in your hair. This is like little fingertips on the top and what those do is mimic how your hand would scrunch hair."
