The art of the messy bun has been practiced for centuries, but we’ve mastered a few tried and true methods that can work for any hair length: the DIY ballerina bun, the perfectly unkempt bun and space buns! These messy buns are the perfect solution for any casual lounge aesthetic or even refreshing hair on an in between day. Gather your hair to the desired location on your head (top, crown, or nape of your neck) and we walk you through how to make the perfect messy bun.

Don’t mistake this for a "perfect" sock bun! This bun is effortless only requires a ponytail. • Gather your hair at your preferred place with your dominant hand. • Using your non-dominant hand, rotate your makeshift pony around your pointer finger to make a twisted pony. (A tighter rotation will give you a tighter bun, while a looser one will give you a messier look.) • As you twist, start to form the donut shape until the entirety of your hair is completely looped. • Securing the look is as easy as popping a ponty tail around the bun. (If you’re going for a cleaner look, tuck your loose pieces in with a couple of bobby pins.)

The DIY Ballerina Bun
Don’t mistake this for a sock bun! This hair bun is effortless and only requires a ponytail, even for those trying to master how to do a short hair messy bun. Gather your hair at your preferred place with your non-dominate hand. Using your dominant hand rotate your makeshift pony around your pointer finger to make a twisted pony. A tighter rotation will give you a tighter bun, while a looser one will give you a casual, messy bun look. As you twist, start to form the donut-bun shape until the entirety of your hair is completely looped. Securing the look is as easy as popping a pony tail around the bun. If you’re going for a cleaner look, tuck your loose pieces in with a couple of bobby pins.
Pro Tips:
Products and tips to enhance your donut bun:
If you have fine hair, sprinkle a touch of BigTYME or a root lift powder into the bulk of your hair for some added body! This will give your messy bun a fuller aesthetic AND give you better hold.
Don’t forget how handy hairspray can be when trying to tame pesky flyaways!
Hair Ties are a fun, femme addition to elevate your bun on days when you want to be the main character. ;)
If you’re going for a top knot bun, consider adding a colorful or bulky clip to secure the hairs near the nap of your neck. It’s a touch of class they’ll never see coming!
Add a bohemian flair by adding small braids to your pony before twisting it into your messy bun!

Steps: - Put ponytail holder around three fingers - Loosely pull all hair back and up where you want your bun to sit - Slide thumb into ponytail holder - Pull ponytail holder over hair and stop slightly past halfway down the ponytail - Wrap hair around the ponytail holder - Bring ponytail holder back over the first loop and secure - Twist bun until you like the look of the shape - Wrap or tuck ends that are sticking out - Pinch and pull small sections of hair to loosen it from your scalp and make it more "messy" - Use BigTYME Root Lift Powder if you want more volume or texture

The Perfectly Unkempt Bun
There’s no need for spending hours trying to create that perfect messy bun any more, the team at TYME has decoded the method! Gather your hair at your ideal location with your non-dominate hand and your ponytail locked and loaded in the dominant hand. Place your ponytail against your scalp, but before you twist to secure that first loop, grab the bulk of your hair. Now twist and secure your bun with the ponytail! You may need to add a few extra loops to secure the bun, depending on your preference. Tuck any undesired loose ends into the ponytail. You quickly just gave yourself an effortless look that can easily be made and remade.
Pro Tips:
Products to enhance your messy bun:
Scrunchies are a girls best friend. And when we say Scrunchie, we mean a dramatic scrunchie. You know what we mean!
Using a texture building product, like BigTYME, will give your messy more grip and body.
Go retro by leaving the bandana ties exposed on the top of your head for a pin-up style flair!
Space Buns
90’s hairstyles are making their way back into the main stream, which means we get to rock space buns whenever we want! Learning how to create space buns is super easy, too! Part your hair down the middle and apply the same methods above to each section, and voi-la you have perfectly messy and playful space buns! We especially love this look for those of us who want to rock our natural hair for a curly hair bun!
Pro Tips:
Products to enhance your space buns:
We 100% suggest using BigTYME in each section of your hair for a fuller aesthetic AND better hold.
Mismatched scrunchies, butterfly clips, you name it, it will enhance your space bun look!
Finishing Your Look
Buns are such a fun way to play with your style! Use a comb and SelfieTYME Hairspray to make either of these looks appear more professional. Another option is to add a touch of BigTYME Root Lift Powder and “washing” your hair with your fingertips to gain dimension in the pulled back locks.
Don’t forget to apply these methods for incredible, easy half-up looks!

Loop to hang – Discreet loop allows you to hang dryer while storing. Super convenient!
When Jacynda Smith, CEO, and Founder of TYME, was asked why she made BlowTYME, she responded:
"I wanted to put everything in a blow dryer. I wanted it quiet, lightweight, powerful. All the things that a woman wants in a blow dryer, even though blow dryer manufacturers told me they didn't want it quiet because they'd keep looking for a higher speed. But I think everyone wants a quiet blow dryer, and a powerful one.I wanted to create a blow dryer that covered all the things that I felt weren't covered out there. It's so lightweight, you can compare it with your phone so that gives you a good idea without having to feel it. I wanted switches that didn't toggle on and off on accident when you were moving your hand around. Another feature I really wanted to add in was the cool shot. I really wanted to stay on so it stays on so you don't have to hold it while you're trying to blow dry. When I was a stylist, I was blow-drying hair and I went to change hands and a fireball shot out of the dryer. And the reason that happens is because brush motors build up particles and they shoot out particles. Brushless motors don't do that, and it's really great for women so that they never have to experience that.A lot of women question why the blow dryer comes with concentrator on. I used to take mine off until I learned how powerful and helpful a concentrator is. And what it does is it directs the airflow, so you can really have a perfect blow-dry. You aren't blow drying pieces that aren't supposed to be blow-dried at the same time. It pops right off and that way you can take it and switch it into the diffuser. The diffuser helps you enhance natural curl. You just scrunch in your hair. This is like little fingertips on the top and what those do is mimic how your hand would scrunch hair."

4th of July: Unity Rolls & Braids
Read Time: 2 min 13 sec
Fourth of July celebrations across the country will look much different this year. No masses of crowds along a shoreline to watch fireworks and no large family cookouts. While we’re getting creative with our celebrations and stocking up on sparklers, and if you’re lucky, some backyard friendly fireworks, we want to take it a step further.
Things can be pretty heavy right now and we want to show togetherness in the most simple but fun way that we know how...through our hair! Our newfound appreciation for liberty, freedom, and UNITY, combined with our passion for speaking out for what’s right, drove us to pull inspiration from two very different eras, the 1940s, and the 1970s. We're calling it Unity Rolls & Braids.
Check out this playful hairstyle from our CEO and Founder, Jacynda!

Unity rolls are such an iconic style! The women of the 40’s made these rolls look stunning with side part and even a middle part. Make this look all about you and choose whatever part makes you feel the most confident.

Depending on your hair type you may need to do a bit of prep work. If you have thicker hair or coarse hair, it’s your lucky day. Jump down to the next paragraph. The ladies with finer and sleeker hair need to add a bit of texture to those locks!
Adding a touch of SelfieTYME Hairspray and an even dose of BigTYME Root Lift Powder Spray will give you the perfect base to create these rolls. We suggest back brushing (or as some might call it, teasing) with your paddle brush, too. This is to create texture through the shaft of your hair, not just the root, so a few small passes should do the trick.

Unity braids are my NEW fav hair style for the summer! I literally had no idea that my hair could braid without a hair tie😍
A post shared by Krystal B | Beauty & Lifestyle (@krystaloverall) on Jun 30, 2020 at 3:16pm PDT
Start by positioning this section of hair to go towards the back and crown of your head. Think about a 45-degree angle. With your fingers behind the section of hair and your thumb on the outside, rotate the hair backward, creating a “roll”. Without opening it, use a Bobby Pin and press into the roll to secure your hair. This may take a bit of practice, but after a try or two, we know you’ll have it nailed down.
Unity Braids
Our favorite part of this style? The braids! This is the braiding hack your mom never taught you. ;) Get rid of the painful tiny elastics that always snap in between your fingers and try this out! Start your braid with three distinct and separate strands of hair. As you start braiding, let the bottom pieces intermingle. DO NOT continue to separate them as you braid like usual, just focus on weaving your top sections. The bottom pieces are going to start to braid themselves! Once you get to the middle, you won’t be able to braid anymore. To lock these braids in, loop the bottom half through your open section and tug tight! Voila! A secure braid that took half the time. Told you we’ve always been serious about saving time getting ready.

TYME Iron: Rocker Waves Tutorial
Read Time: 2 min 19 sec
We love the opportunity to have fun with our hair...and these fluffy curls are IN! Spice up your day one, two, or three hair with "Rocker Waves". These waves are the perfect transition style when going from straight to curly and are a wonderful way to test your skills AND have a little fun. The TYME Iron Pro also leaves this style looking like "natural" waves, so if you have naturally curly hair this may be a good curl to use to enhance a few curls that aren't as defined as you like!
Bring it on, #carefreesummerhair!

Fluffy curls are IN! 😉 vertical sections • use straightening side • rock your iron back and fourth • repeat the pattern frequently down the hair strand • don’t judge each curl until the full look comes together 🥰
A post shared by TYME Hair Products (@tyme) on May 17, 2020 at 1:59pm PDT
One of our favorite aspects of this style is how easy it is to create! Check out our step by step details below and add this look to your style library.
Drop it LOW ;)
This look is a low maintenance style that is meant to be messy, so turn down the heat on your TYME Iron. Our irons can be set anywhere from 300 to 400 degrees. We suggest starting at a lower temperature to create these waves, and you can always bump up the heat if needed.
Iron Grip
Unlike typical curls or waves, to master this look, use the straightening side of your iron. Keep your thumb behind the power button like when you curl, but enter your hair strand with the side that has exposed plates, not the curved, curling side! Create the waves on your left side by crossing your right arm across your chest instead of up and over your head. On the right side keep your elbow at a comfortable level.**
** If you are a lefty creating this look, reverse those directions! Cross your left arm across your chest to create waves on the right side and on the left side keep your elbow UP! Need a little more direction? Check out our TYME Iron for Left-Handers Explained post!
Makin' Waves
Rocker Waves are a variation of a straight style, so be sure to keep the straightening side (exposed plates) toward you. Depending on the look you want to achieve, grab small or larger vertical sections of your hair and hold the iron at nearly a horizontal angle. Work the iron through your hair by rocking it toward your head and away. Keep up this method throughout the entire stretch of your hair.
Since this is a playful look, make sure you’re not too hard on yourself while creating it. Don’t judge each section of the hair as you finish it. Wait until the end and you’ll be surprised at how easily the sections will flow together.
Pro Tip: Start at the under sections of your hair. It may take a few sections to land the amount of wave you want for your look, and this is a perfect area that can be well hidden if there’s a little too much or not enough “rock” to these waves.
Finish The Look!
We stand by our tried and true product Limitless Universal Spray! This thermal protectant does so much more than just protect your locks. Upstaged doubles as a styling agent with a light hold, making it perfect for this playful, messy style. We also suggest playing with the amount of volume you apply to this look. Adding a touch of BigTYME Root Lift Powder will add a level volume you didn’t know you needed.
We would love to hear your results, so please share it with us on any of our platforms!

30 Day Hair Washing Challenge: Part 2
Read Time:
3 min 16 sec
We have spent the better part of the past year messy, comfortable, crying, you name it. None of us were quite ready for the isolation brought on with COVID-19. Somewhere along the way, it seems like we turned our sight inward and started that work, the healing work. We decided to face the things we had been avoiding, head-on. This process helped us clear space for the new version of ourselves, the authentic version.
Our team at TYME is challenging you to truly dedicate yourself to this new, authentic you. Being able to present that version of yourself takes time, and we all have plenty of that right now, don’t we? In this challenge, we are encouraging you to survey all the parts of your life that take too much of your time, specifically getting ready for the day. We want you to spend less time in the bathroom getting ready, and more time out in the world doing the things you love.
How do we cut that time?
Washing your hair, less.
Think about it. On an average day, washing your hair plus blow drying AND styling? That would take over an hour, easy. WHO HAS TIME FOR THAT?
Bare with us
Extending your wash cycle is definitely a challenge, especially if you’re an every day washer. Your scalp and hair follicle have adjusted to your wash cycle and anything out of the ordinary will cause them to work in over-drive, aka you’ll get greasy hair fairly quickly. While we don’t want you walking around with some late-90s slicked back hair, we do want you to try and bare with a little excess grease. (Don’t worry, we’ve put together a couple of hairstyles that will help get you through!) That means NO DRY SHAMPOO during this challenge.
Full disclosure: While dry shampoo may come in clutch when you have pushed your wash cycle a little too far, it really isn’t doing much for your scalp. Training your hair without the help of dry shampoo is best for your scalp health.
Start Small
X = days to wash your hair
Try this washing pattern! We’re not asking you to jump in and go 7 days between washes right away. If you wash your hair every day now, try going every other day for a week. Once your hair and scalp get used to that (usually about a week process) work on extending your wash by one more day and stay there until your scalp gets used to it again. Take the time you need, as this calendar is just a general guideline. You may need to play around with the schedule for what works for you. If you need to stick on washing your hair every three days for more than two weeks, that is a-okay! Allowing your scalp to adjust at a comfortable pace is key!
Win Big
Why is extending your wash good to consider? Not only is it better for your scalp and hair health, but it is going to save you tons of time and product! Getting ready will take half the time on the days you aren’t washing and blow-drying your hair, and if you practice this routine and use proper products, your hairstyles will follow suit. Your curls will last for days instead of just hours. Most of us here at TYME wash and style our hair once a week ;)
After this 30 day challenge, you should find yourself able to go more days without washing your hair. Was your goal to go 4 days? Amazing! Was your goal 7 days? No problem, continue this calendar into month two and just keep extending your days between washes by one day until your scalp is ready.
Terms and Condition(er)s
Shampoos and conditioners are not created the same way. We always advocate for a filler-free product, like Pregame and Showoff. They are the best for your scalp health and will get you the results you’re looking for, faster.
Another crucial aspect of this challenge is how you treat your hair after its washed. Here are our recommendations for the best outcome:
Use a lightweight thermal protectant before styling.
If blow drying, we typically suggest waiting until your hair is 70% or 80% dry before drying. Make sure you’re drying on a cool/warm setting, not hot.
Air drying is a great damage-free solution, too!
If you have gone past the point of no return and your hair is a little too oily, opt for a root lift powder instead of a dry shampoo. The powder will give your hair a matte appearance and give you styling power!
Think of all the things you could do with an extra hour. You have the opportunity to give yourself that time right at your fingertips (literally)! Don’t sell yourself short. All it takes is 30 days of practicing a small piece of self-care. WE BELIEVE IN YOU!
TYME Iron: How Small Adjustments Can Make A BIG Difference In Your Curls
Read time: 2 min 30 sec
Since most of our users are making the leap from flat irons and curling irons, nailing down the motions of the TYME Iron is vital to the experience and end result. Here are a few easy adjustments that we’ve compiled from our TYME Style sessions with newbies!
Getting Prepped to Style
We always recommend curling on freshly washed and dried hair. Your foundational products are the key to healthy, hydrated hair. Using a nourishing shampoo and conditioner like Power Couple will lock in moisture, prevent damage from heat tools, and hold your style longer. Make sure to apply a thermal protectant, like UPSTAGED, before you begin heat styling.
How are you sectioning your hair?
Our recommendation is to leave all your hair down! Start styling your hair by taking vertical sections and moving back to front. Brush through each section before curling. You’ll want the hair flat like a sheet of paper so the iron glides through smoothly and evenly heats the hair.
Always hold the TYME Iron with your thumb behind the power button. Always! This is the only way you will get the curls you want! Also, pay attention to your heat settings. Although it may take a couple of trial-runs to find what temperature works best for your hair type and texture, having your heat too high or too low can make a HUGE difference.
While You’re Curling
Soften your grip!
Make sure there is a slight gap between the plates of the iron as you glide through the hair! This is a fool-proof way to know that you are not applying too much pressure and damaging your hair. Also, when you squeeze the iron with too much tension, you’re more prone to creating creases in your curls.
Are you giving each curl the time it deserves?
If you push your iron through a section too quickly, you won’t properly heat the hair which means it won’t get styled. This method can also create quite a bit of frizz! Test out how many seconds it takes to get your ideal curl. Depending on the length of your hair it could take anywhere from three seconds to ten.
Keep your hair in between the plates!
Once you have your hair placed between the heated plates, help make sure your hair stays in place! Grab the end of your section to prevent it from sliding off of the plates.
Pro Tip: Always make sure you are pushing the iron forward when you curl! When you push the hair back or directly out, you are counteracting the rotation in your wrist.
Finishing Your Look!
“Where hair cools, is where it stays!”
Say that again. Remember to twist your hair back after curling it. Right after you curl a section it is still warm enough to be manipulated. Using your index finger, twist your fresh curl away from your face to set in the shape you want and let it cool. We recommend only gliding through each section once so you are not overly applying heat and damaging your hair. If you have a curl that is a completely lost cause, wait until the very end of your styling session for it to cool before re-curling it. You may also realize you don’t need to re-curl that piece once your whole style comes together!
Match your right side to your left!
If you rotate your wrist significantly on the left side, make sure you are using the same wrist rotation on the right side. Keeping your elbow and forearm at the same angle on both sides will ensure you are creating matching curls.
These small adjustments should help you create your ideal style!

Just Getting By?
A few small details can go a long way while trying to keep your hair cut looking fresh. Here are a few tips for men and women with short hair looking to maintain the structure of their short cut, while still letting their length grow painlessly while practicing social distancing. Grab your edging clippers and let’s get started.
Neckline
When cleaning up the neckline, pay attention to the basic shape of the back of the hair cut. Is it square? What angle does the hair follow while traveling up towards the ears? Follow the line that is already there, and start by taking off a small amount to make this process foolproof. You can always remove more hair!
Cleaning Up A Hard Part
Use your straight comb to create a distinct part. Brush the hair in either direction to make the part clear and free of flyaways. Be sure to have a straight line with your section, as this is the line you’ll use to guide your clippers. Barely tap clippers along the part to create the line. Keeping the ears clear, closely follow the line that already exists from previous cuts. Remember to fold the ear out of the way so you have a clear line of vision and your loved one leaves this experience unscathed.
Trimming Sideburns
For a more natural look, we recommend finding the “v” around the middle of the ear. This is an optimal spot to cut off a sideburn from the rest of any facial hair. Create a straight line and slide clippers down to remove the rest of the unwanted hair.
Going All Out?
Follow all of the recommended steps above. After you have cleaned up the edges and made yourself a good outline to work off of, completely wet down your subject’s hair. Grab your comb, scissors, clippers, and desired guards.
Basic short men's hair cut cutting angles.
Basic long men's hair cut cutting angles.
Basic Tiger King hair cut angles. ;)
1. Is There A Disconnect?
If there is a long section that doesn’t match with the rest of the hair, brush the longer hair completely out of the way. Using your comb, pull the hair straight out, so the comb is parallel with the wall. Grab this hair with your pointer and middle finger and trim this excess hair with your scissors. If you end up with unsightly lines, use your comb to pull the hair away from the scalp vertically and barley trim the edges to soften the line.
2. Cutting The Top
Pull the hair directly up. Start small and cut directly across. If the side length is greater than the top length, comb this hair directly out towards the wall and cut it at a 90-degree angle. For people with thicker hair, this may result in a harsh line when the top and bottom hair is brushed together. Use your comb and pull the hair where these two sections meet, out at a 45-degree angle and cut into this section. Cutting into the section will lessen the look of a harsh line. Pro Tip: Trimming straight up and down on the sides and straight across on top will give the basic structure for a trimmed look.
3. Cutting At The Crown
Take the time to assess the length between the top of the hair vs the back. Cutting the crown is tricky, so it is important to game plan this section of hair. Ideally, you should be able to match the top length and the back length with a cut at a 45-degree angle. Start by matching the top length to the crown length with your 45-degree angle. After this length is matched, pull your crown length to meet your back length at a 45-degree angle and repeat the process.
FAQ
What Guard To Use?
Clipper guards are labeled in “weeks of growth,” so your #1 guard is one week, #2 is two weeks, and so on. Some kits are supplied with blending guards to help fade from guard to guard and make the cut appear seamless. Hair grows between a ¼ and ½ an inch a month. Keep that in mind so you know which guard to use.
Nervous To Start?
Always start with your biggest guard. This gives you the opportunity to backtrack with a smaller one without running the risk of accidentally giving someone a buzz cut.
No Guard?
Grab a comb! Use a scooping technique to make the hair stand out and clean up the ends with your comb! With longer lengths, you can pull the hair out with your comb and then pull the hair out between your pointer and middle finger. If you are using this method, remember that the first cut you make should start as your guide for the rest of the hair. Barely loosen your grip of this hair and use your comb to pull in a small section to cut alongside the section you just cut. Continue this process throughout the entirety hair.
Don’t Have Professional Shears?
Using shears that are not designed for professional grooming, usually results in cuts that are not precise. When working with unfamiliar blade sizes, remember to work in smaller sections. These smaller sections will give you consistency throughout the entirety of the cut vs chopping through large sections.
Cutting On A Toddler?
Put their favorite show on! Let them be entertained. They may be sensitive to the noise of the clippers, so don’t be afraid to use your scissors.

In the midst of all the changes happening in the world around us, we have more time to focus on our beauty routines, and the changes we have never had the time for ourselves before, but have always wanted to try.
In this transition of us spending more time at home what better time to evolve your hair care routine to be lower maintenance for when you are ready to venture into the world again?! We’re challenging you to wash your hair less(!) and come out of Corona Quarantine as the strongest, most confident you possible.
The Challenge:

The goal of this process is to eliminate any factors that can make your scalp think it has to produce oils to compensate for the dryness. Below we have included tips to help make each step in your hair routine as simple as possible for you, so there is no guesswork!
Washing
Before applying your shampoo, make sure your hair is soaking wet.
Distribute shampoo from scalp to ends, really concentrating on the scalp If you’re using a mild cleansing shampoo like PREGAME, the more water you add as your shampooing the more later you will achieve.
If you’re looking for an airy, weightless finish, shampoo twice.
Lathering and allow the shampoo to activate in your hair for 2 to 5 minutes.
Conditioning
Before applying your conditioner, while still in the shower squeeze hair out to get it as dry as possible to allow it to penetrate each hair strand thoroughly.
Apply conditioner from scalp to ends, concentrating on the ends.
Do not be afraid of the conditioner touching your scalp (especially if it is a lightweight formula like SHOWOFF) as this can play a big factor in your scalp over producing oils!
Massage into hair and scalp, and allow it to nourish both for 2 to 5 minutes before rinsing.
Styling
Use a lightweight thermal protectant.
Remember that the products that you use on your hair after your shower can equally affect your scalp and hair health. We recommend Upstaged Thermal Protectant.
If blow drying, we typically suggest waiting until your hair is 70% or 80% dry before drying
BlowTYME Hair Dryer has three heat settings and two fan speed settings, so you can find the perfect combination for your hair needs.
It is important to not over dry hair. Hydrated hair has volume, is strong, shines without looking greasy, and ultimately is SOFT. Whereas, over dried hair tends to feel rougher and have a matte appearance.
If you like to air dry, one of our favorite hair hacks is to try just blow drying at the scalp. This will create lift at the scalp and will give your hair an overall more weightless feeling!
Tips for air drying
To Avoid
Forgo the use of dry shampoo during this challenge (and hopefully long term, with the exception of extreme cases) Just like washing every day, dry shampoo strips your hair of the natural oils your scalp is naturally creating, which is exactly what we don’t want in this process. Using dry shampoo will backtrack all of the progress you have made!
End Results
After this 30 day challenge, you should find yourself able to go more days without washing your hair. Was your goal to go 4 days? Amazing! Was your goal 7 days? No problem, continue this calendar into month two and just keep extending your days between washes by one day until your scalp is ready. Why is extending your wash good to consider? Not only is it better for your scalp and hair health, but it is going to save you tons of time and product! Getting ready will take half the time on the days you aren’t washing and blow drying your hair, and if you practice this routine and use proper products, your hairstyles will follow suit. Your curls will last for days instead of just hours. Most of us here at TYME wash and style our hair once a week ;)

30 Day Hair Health Challenge
Read Time: 4 min 14 sec
Hair health can be determined by so many different factors. We get TONS of questions about hair health from customers. Since it is such an important topic in the industry, we’ve put together a hair health test so you can feel confident that you are taking the right steps to keep your hair healthy, or restore it!
There are billions of women in the world and it's safe to say few follow the same beauty routines. Whether it's a 50 step daily routine to a once a week complete overhaul, every woman’s styling, and care tactics are different.
At TYME we want you to take charge of your timeline and implement a healthy hair regimen when its right for you! We challenge you to take on 30 days of keeping a journal of the differences you notice after you implement these KEY tips for healthy hair!
Texture
Strength
Diameter
Patterns
Brilliancy
Scent
Focus On Texture
This test is all about using your sense of touch! Grab a good chunk of your hair and just FEEL it. Healthy hair should feel smooth and soft to the touch. When your hair starts to feel brittle or straw-like, that is a prominent sign that your hair is damaged. Damage that causes this feeling throughout our locks tends to stem from dehydration, over-drying, UV exposure, and excessive heat damage.
Always use a thermal protectant when styling your hair and protect your locks when out in the sun! Using a thermal protectant that protects from UV exposure and heat styling is our recommendation!
Don’t confuse damaged texture with coarseness though. Coarse, textured hair is something to be praised, but healthy textured hair should still feel hydrated!
Focus On Strength
We tend to pay a great deal of attention to the ends of our hair, but how often do you test the strength of the middle to top of your strands? These sections of your hair should be able to withstand a great deal of tension - think about the effort we go through to perfect a top knot or to squeeze that ponytail around for one more loop.
Want to test the strength of your hair? Take a medium to small section and twist! If you start to see “baby hairs” popping out all over the place and not just the bottom, this breakage is a telltale sign of weak strands. Weak strands are the result of over dried and dehydrated hair.
Start your journey back to strong strands with a dusting cut! Keep in mind when blowdrying that your hair should feel cool to the touch once it is dry, and should look shiny. If it is very warm to the touch and dull, you just blowdried a little too long. Great news!! You have the opportunity to fix this every time you wash and dry your hair. Focus On Diameter Consistency
We’re testing individual strands this time around! At different points throughout your hair (crown, nape of the neck, face frame) run your fingers from the root of an individual strand to the end. If you feel a difference, test a few more pieces to see if the difference in thickness changes consistently in each strand. This change could be the result of chemical damage.
Over processing with bleach and color can weaken your hair over time. Avoiding chemicals on the areas of your hair that feel the weakest will help stop the breakage from becoming worse, as well as micro trims!
Focus On Patterns
Even though women tend to have a more intensive hair care regimen than the average man, we can still fall victim to hair loss. Although hereditary hair loss can be hard to combat, it's important to make sure you’re taking preventative measures to ensure the longevity of your locks! Our hair pattern should be fairly even throughout the entirety of our scalp.
Pay close attention to your entire hairline. If you find that hair is starting to appear sparse around this band, try switching up your hairstyle! Repetitive styles like a high pony or bun cause excessive tension to this band and cause the hair to adapt, resulting in hair thinning or hair loss altogether.
Notice this band of hair breakage in a different spot down the strands? Do you wear your hair up in the same spot frequently? This is a key sign that your hair is breaking where the hairband is placed. Try using something like a soft scrunchie instead! Notice a random thin section of hair?
Pay close attention to that spot when you’re styling next. You may be applying too much heat to this chunk of hair! Always wait to re-curl or straighten until AFTER the initial pass of heat has cooled.
Focus On Brilliancy
We all want our hair to SHINE, but is it too coated with fillers that make our hair look like Barbie's hair? Overuse of heavy, oily products can create excessive shine throughout our locks. Whereas, the lack of conditioner can make our hair look matte and dull. The best combination of product and conditioner is unique to your hair and takes a journey to find that perfect mix, but the work is so worth it! Imagine having gorgeous shiny hair for the rest of your life after only practicing your combinations for a few weeks.
Avoid using oily products, especially before styling with heat tools. Think about what oil does on a hot pan while cooking. Over time this can cause damage to your hair, and there are other ways to add shine into your strands :)
Focus On Scent
Even the smell of our hair is an incredible sign of our hair health. Properly moisturized hair will hold onto scents for days. (Excluding bonfire, that smell lingers for days no matter what!) If you notice a change in the scent of your hair when/after applying heat, that is proof your hair is dehydrated.
Condition well and ALWAYS use a thermal protectant. Avoid over drying and over styling with heat tools!
Grab your favorite bullet journal and take note of these six different categories for four weeks while implementing these changes. Everyone’s results will be different, but its a start of a journey for life long of healthy hair. We would love to hear your results, so please share it with us on any of our platforms!
