An Inspiring Mother's Day Message from CEO Jacynda Smith
Read Time: 3 min 25 sec
Congratulations! You have made it through this epic change humanity is experiencing, all while maintaining a home...and a family...and yourself! It is both profound and confounding at the same time. I went into the year thinking 2020, “What an amazing year! A year that will be full of perfect 20/20 vision and perfect hindsight.” … Although it didn’t look anything like I was expecting - especially as a mother - it brought on an amazing transformation.
There have been so many descriptions about what was coming to transform the Earth and humanity. But I don’t think anyone knew it would come in this form. Something that stopped everyone from their normal routine and gave us a whole new lens through which to view the world through.
Have there been challenging moments?
Absolutely!
Will there be more challenges?
Absolutely!
We’ve learned to live in a whole new way and cleaned out our closets...both physically and emotionally. Now it’s tyme to bring this new you back into the world to incorporate who you have grown into and reintroduce yourself. If you don’t feel like this is the journey you are on yet. I would love to pass on some of the daily practices I personally implemented. These practices have made the journey of life, and the past year especially, feel more empowered, enriched, and enjoyable.
Meditation
Learning new perspectives and unlearning old ones
Reading and growing my knowledge
Speaking the mantras below into existence.
“I Deserve to Prioritize Myself”
Most moms can admit that we get lost in “doing.” Doing things for our children, for our partners, for our in-laws, or the neighbor. It’s a part of our nature to help, trust me, I get it! Some of us get lost in the opportunity to help and it turns into what feels like an obligation to help. In that obligation, we lose our focus on who we are and what we want. If you’re always putting the needs of others over your own, it’s nearly impossible to be the best version of you, you can be.
So...prioritize yourself! Nurture yourself. Nurture your mind. Nurture your spirit. Nurture your body. Try to make time for yourself every single day. Even if it’s just five minutes a day, at LEAST it’s five minutes that day to just center yourself. You deserve it.
And don’t forget that by prioritizing yourself, you’re setting an incredible example for your children! They should learn how to prioritize their own needs and wants, and who better to set that example than the wonder woman who cares for them - and herself - on a daily basis.
“Follow My Excitement”
Breaking down our mold of prioritization gives us space to follow our excitement.
I love using this analogy with people! Think about a decision you have coming up or even just your plans for Friday night. You can get dressed up and go out, or you can stay at home in your sweats and read a book. Now grab a coin. Heads you’re going out. Tails you’re staying in. In that split second before the coin lands, you probably already know what it is you want to do. When that coin lands, you’re either really excited or slightly disappointed, right?
Stop letting yourself be slightly disappointed! Go with the option that brings you more excitement. Adopting this way of making decisions in your life truly unlocks possibilities. You stop sweating the small stuff. You stop doing things out of obligation. You start prioritizing joy and excitement.
Imagine what that can do for your parenting style?! Parents continuously put themselves and subsequently our children in the role to follow the status quo. Let your kids live in their excitement and not just follow the norms of society. Those expectations are so tough for kids to navigate and engrains a self-conscious mindset that prevents them from pursuing their passion.
I think the world needs a bit more of that. People who lead a life full of pursuing their excitement.
“I Am Enough”
It’s a practice.
From a young age, we are constantly pushed into categories and stereotypes. When you search for the core of why a kid is hard on themselves in sports or school, or even why people insult themselves or they feel like they don’t look good in pictures… it all stems from that core feeling that you don’t feel like you’re good enough for something. All of us have those beliefs. That’s where doubt and fear and judgment start to come in. But what some people don’t recognize is when you let those feelings win, and you start judging yourself, it spills out. It turns into doubt and fear and judgment of other people.
None of that is who we truly are.
You are born enough in this world and you are worthy of everything in this world. When you start saying that to yourself and honing in on that fact...it changes your world.
Don’t leave these mantras in this blog. Take them with you. Start practicing them.
And remember…
The best parent version of you stems from the actual best version of you.
Five Salon Terms to Learn Before Scheduling Your Next Appointment
Read Time: 3 min 39 sec
Let’s have a moment for our hairstylists. These incredible people bring an internal version of ourselves to the surface and leave us feeling fabulous. They deserve a national holiday, a cake, presents, the whole nine. Stylists spend years perfecting their craft and are continually educating themselves on the latest trends so that we can stay this gorgeous.
How can we make their lives a little bit easier? By learning their lingo.
The next time you are ready to make a huge life change (a.k.a. cut and/or color), keep these five things in mind when making your appointment.
Consultation
If you’re looking to take on a significant or first-time change, scheduling a consultation with your stylist will make a massive difference in the results! Your stylist can give you a more exact look into the time and dollar commitment your desired look will take during your consultation. PLUS, a ton of people get anxious when they sit down at the salon and make impulse decisions. These decisions can either teeter toward a stunning new look or...a not-so-great new look. Our suggestion is to schedule a consultation, even if it’s just a phone call.
Low vs. High Maintenance Color
There is a huge difference here, ladies! Knowing the difference in what type of color you want will completely change how to talk to your stylist and your at-home maintenance expectations.
Low Maintenance Color
We love hair color that has depth! If you’re looking to spice your hair up, low maintenance color is a perfect place to start. Keep in mind, your time in the salon will increase with any addition of color. However, your time commitment beyond the salon shouldn’t increase. This color addition should grow out nicely without the addition of color maintenance appointments.
There are two rules of thumb for people looking to add low maintenance color: (one) the color you’re adding should not stray far from your natural locks, and (two) you’re only coloring a fraction of your hair, not all of it.
High Maintenance Color
Don’t let the title intimidate you. We are here for high maintenance color! Platinum blondes, sassy reds, and pastel colors are absolutely stunning, but they do take a touch of extra work (that is every bit worth it). High maintenance colors typically take a few more hours and a few more dollars, but with the right at-home maintenance and regular appointments with your stylist, these looks can stay bold all year long!
Highlights
The world of highlights has changed a ton in the past decade. We would like to think for the better, but we’ll let future generations decide that! ;) Below are the three most common highlighting techniques and how they differ.
Balayage/Hair Painting
Say it with us: baa-luh-yaage. Balayage, or hair painting, quickly took over after some “ombre” looks weren’t entirely cutting it. This coloring process takes time (expect 2+ hours) as your stylist is literally painting color onto your hair, but it is oh so worth it. Balayage highlights are typically low maintenance since your roots are untouched and can grow with their natural color. If you’re opting for an ashy tone or bold color, be ready to leave the salon with an extra product or two to keep that color looking fresh.
Babylights/Weave highlights

Babylights are a stunning option when you’re looking to brighten up your overall hair color. They give a touch of dimension without the obviously highlighted look. Don’t be fooled by their low maintenance aesthetic though, babylights take time and precision to get right. If you’re going for an all-over look expect to be in the salon for more than three hours.
Pro Tip: If you’re looking to up your current balayage for a spring/summer look, adding babylights is the perfect way to it brighten up!
Face Framing/Money Piece

A post shared by Beauty Launchpad (@beautylaunchpad)
Face framing highlights are EVERYTHING right now! While some kids on TikTok have taken it to the next level with bold colors, the everyday woman will feel fierce with these highlights. In this process, your stylist will section off along your hairline and use a hair painting technique to brighten these pieces. We suggest sticking to a color just a shade or two brighter than your natural color for an effortless looking pop!
Cut vs a Dusting cut
Ladies...let’s give our stylists a break. A cut is a cut. A trim takes the same amount of time and effort as a six-inch chop. We’ve found that typically when someone asks for a trim, they truly want a dusting cut. Typically people in need of a dusting cut love the way their hair is growing and want to keep it healthy. Whereas someone who wants a traditional cut is looking for a change in their look.
Layers

Whether it’s no layers, choppy layers, or a full-on shag cut, layers completely change how any hairstyle looks on us. Before you demand graduated layers or a one-length cut, consider asking your stylist for their opinion. Stylists see good, bad, and fabulous hairstyles all day long, so you know that you can trust their judgment. ;) You would be shocked at how different layers can impact your everyday look.
Keep in mind, women with curly hair are looking for a completely different set of layers than women with straight hair!
Now that you have the basics, you can start collecting those inspiration pictures and let your stylist create life-changing looks! For more tips and hair tutorials, follow us on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest.
Solutions To Getting Ready When You're Saying "HI" From Home!
Read Time: 3 min 41 sec
If you’ve been tasked with creating a home office and working there since last March, you KNOW the struggle of getting ready for a zoom meeting...or staying on task...or having kids scream in the house all day long…and the list goes on! While we may be blessed with the opportunity to keep working that doesn’t make turning on the camera for a meeting or virtual happy hour any less of a struggle.
We’ve fallen into a routine of comfortability within our homes, as we should! Sweatpant sales are through the roof and let’s be honest, do any of us really know how to do a full face of make-up still? While this comfortable aesthetic is perfect for those certain coworkers or friends (you know who you are), it isn’t always ideal for a full team zoom call or FaceTime dating.
Our team at TYME compiled a list of easy, go-to hairstyles to get you ready for your virtual events while still working on extending your wash cycle with little to no effort!

The Allstars
These looks are the most low maintenance hairstyles for every hair type that you can throw together for that Zoom meeting you forgot about or that impromptu FaceTime happy hour.
Head(bands) First
While they may seem like a cheap scapegoat, today’s trendiest headbands are an entirely different vibe. These knotted headbands have been duped and recreated by a ton of different companies. Tossing one of these headbands on after giving your hair a brush through or adding a touch of a styling agent (like Upstaged) is the perfect way to give a laid back vibe, but still, extremely put together!
Top Knot-ch
Will a top knot ever go out of style? We pray not! Top knots work for nearly every hair type and medium to long hair. They can be sleek and polished or wild and fun, making them ideal for both a date night or presenting your latest project.
Locked and Low-ded
You can never go wrong with a sleek low bun or ponytail. It’s the ultimate power look! Give yourself a hard part (left, right, or center!) and pull those locks back. This is also a great style to soften up by pulling out a few face-framing pieces!
For Straight Locks

Girl! What a quick brush through can do for you is incredible! We’re jealous. But if you’re looking to give a little extra oomph to your look try these amplifiers:
Fishtail braid
Give yourself a deep part on the opposite side of where you want your braid to sit and start your fishtail braid at the nape of your neck. These types of braids are so easy to keep sleek and refined or you can add a touch of texture before braiding with a spritz of BigTYME!
Bubble Pony
These ponytails are SO fun! They can be worn as a high pony look or a twist on a low pulled-together look. No matter where the bubble pony sits, add tons of volume to this look with BigTYME. It will give you the perfect amount of texture to make these bubbles POP!
Low and Slow Curls
Turn the temperature down on your TYME Iron, add a healthy dose of thermal protectant and curl your hair at a slower-than-normal pace. These curls will not only look flawless but with a touch of hairspray, they will last for days, giving you an advantage on the day!
Wavy Mane

If you have wavy hair EMBRACE IT! There are endless opportunities for your hair type, but we’re obsessing over these:
Play with your part!
A wonderful to add a little bit of spice to your look AND extend your wash is to switch up your part! While your hair may fight you on it for a minute or two, keeping one side tucked behind your ear will help manage those stubborn pieces.
Claw Clips
Hello, the 90s are calling and they’re coming back in full force. Giant claw clips are finding their way back into our 2021 fashion trends and we’re here for it. We’re talking major Julia Roberts vibes. These giant clips are a low maintenance way of getting all your hair out of your face while still having a pulled-together look.
At-home Blowout.
We love a good blowout! When done right, a blowout can add tons of volume to your locks and add day(s) to your wash cycle. Do yourself a favor and start learning to master the art of the blowout!
Curls for Days
Adding an extra day of life to your curls with a generous amount of Upstaged is an easy solution for your curls! But if you’re looking to amp up your aesthetic these tricks are PERFECT for you:
Stick a pin in it!
Bold clips and barrettes are flooding our Instagram feeds. They are such an easy way to quickly add a ton of flair to your locks!
French Braids
Sometimes our curls don’t quite wake up with us. Instead of adding a ton of product to perk them back up, go with the flow and let them relax with these easy braids! Finish the braids all the way through or opt for fun space buns to give a dash of sass to your look.
Silky Smooth
While for some of us it may not be a “quick fix,” but straightening our locks adds a ton of other possibilities to day-to-day looks. By turning up the temperature on your TYME Iron, you’ll cut your straightening time immensely AND those straight locks will last even longer!

Manifesting Better Hair: ATCE Stages Of Hair Loss And Growth
Read Time: 3 min 19 sec
Haircare is so much more than we think. While a #selfcare moment featuring a hair mask and some leave-in-conditioner is beneficial to our locks and good for the soul, true haircare requires an understanding of how our hair functions.
All of the 100,000 hairs on our head go through the same four stages of growth: anagen, catagen, telogen, and exogen. (Is anyone else having flashbacks to high school biology class?) The time spent in these four stages will vary from person to person, as we know not all hair is created equal. However, having an understanding of how these stages affect your hair will give you a new perspective on how to treat your hair moving forward.
It’s important to note that every hair follicle in your head is on its own timeline.
Phase One: Anagen
You may have heard something along the lines of “hair texture changes every seven years,” and while that is not exactly true, there is a bit of truth behind that statement. At all times, about 90% of our hair is in the anagen phase, your hair’s growing stage. Each strand has a growing stage of three to five years. During these years our hair typically grows half an inch per month, however (if you’re lucky) some people may have genetically longer growing stages and their hair grows at a faster rate. We notice this phase over time, but it is most apparent after we get our hair cut, as strands in the anagen phase will quickly extend past the obvious trim line. Because the majority of our hair is in this stage at all times, it is vital that we consistently practice a healthy haircare routine.
Phase Two: Catagen
Consider the catagen phase a stage of puberty. It serves as the transitional period of a hair follicle’s life before it hits adulthood. During this phase, your hair follicle is shrinking in preparation for the last two phases and the new strand that will eventually emerge. Catagen typically only lasts a couple of weeks and is hardly recognizable.
Phase Three: Telogen
Your hair is l-i-t-e-r-a-l-l-y doing nothing for three months (wouldn’t that be nice) in the telogen phase. The hair follicle has reduced in size enough to still allow the hair to remain in place and allow for a brand new strand to begin growth. While this new strand of hair is beginning to develop, there are no visual changes to your hair.
Phase Four: Exogen
As one might have guessed, the exogen phase is when the hair exits the follicle. Daily we will lose, at most, 100 strands of hair. This phase can last up to five months, and while these numbers may seem alarming, please note that at any given time, your hair is consistently shedding up to 10% of its entirety. Once the hair has fallen out, the anagen phase begins and the cycle restarts.
If you live in a region that experiences frequent seasonal changes, your hair will adjust to these patterns. For example, your exogen phase may start in the summer, but the bulk of these hairs may release in the fall as the weather turns.
Caring For Your Hair Throughout These Cycles:
Because the majority of your hair spends most of its life in the anagen phase, giving your hair strong building blocks is the best way to care for it. This means basic solutions like taking vitamins, exercise (yes, it affects your hair growth), and reducing stress levels, but there are also a few more steps you can take to ensure your hair has the best chance of reaching maximum growth.
Shampoo and Conditioner
What you wash and nourish your hair with acts as a foundation. Shampoos and conditioners produced with empty ingredients and fillers will weigh your hair down and clog your hair follicles, reducing your growth opportunity. A good shampoo and conditioner will cleanse the scalp while providing enough moisture that your hair follicle can produce the oils it needs to benefit the hair strand. Find out more information on why this oil production is essential to a healthy head of hair here.
Stimulate Your Hair Follicles
That’s right ladies. Scalp massages aren’t just for TLC. Stimulated hair follicles are more active and therefore work harder to produce longer strands. We recently added a tool to our collection that will turn your shower into the healthy hair, mini-spa of your dreams.
Prevent Breakage
Think of hair damage the same way you would a hangnail. Drying it out or continuously bothering the hangnail will eventually make the damage work down to the nail bed. The same goes for hair. To prevent breakage from reaching the roots we suggest the following: Always use a heat protectant. Avoid the overuse of direct heat. Whenever you brush your hair, start with the bottom section and slowly work your way up to prevent any ripping or breakage.
Take care of those luscious locks regularly and in time, you will notice how differently it grows!

2020 Fall And Winter Hair Accessory Guide
We love exploring the new trends that pop up every season. Whether it’s clothing, jewelry, shoes, or hairstyles, getting to dive in and try new looks is always fun. Who doesn’t love playing dress-up?
2020 has served as a transformational year for fashion, so we’re embracing all things “luxury lounge” or our personal favorite “quarantine chic.” By taking the turn towards functional and eco-friendly fashion, we’re moving towards a more attainable definition of beauty that works for everyone from runway models to athletes and busy moms too!
We’ve scoured the edges of the internet to find the BEST late-fall/winter hair accessories to help you feel chic if you’re drinking wine on the couch or finally getting a chance to head out for a night on the town.
Bows
Bows are no longer reserved for the cheerleaders of the world. A strategically placed bow can elevate a quickly thrown together hairstyle! We’re opting for lower placements like on the backside of your messy bun or holding together your low ponytail this season. Using a headscarf to create your bow makes for a statement style while using sheer material will give you a soft, romantic look.
Bold Headbands
We LOVE this trend! Ever since Gucci started making statement headbands, the fashion world has been sticking to it. More and more brides are opting for a simpler hairstyle with a bold headband to give them an angelic look on the biggest day of their lives, while some women are using them to bring a bit more fashion into their day four or five hair.
Ponytails
Ok...so they never really went anywhere, BUT there are so many more options now! The textured pony of the early 2000s is back in action and the 90s sleek low pony is making a comeback amongst Gen Z. We especially love a slicked-back look with TONS of volume and texture and a fluffed-up, bubble pony!
Giant Scrunchies
Dear Scrunchies,
We’re so sorry we abandoned you for a decade or more. You’re really wonderful and make us feel fabulous. Thanks for being patient while we got our $h!+ together.
Love, Women everywhere.
Scrunchies have made a serious fashion comeback in the past few years and we’re here for it! Dramatically sized scrunchies are everything right now. They look boho chic on your wrist and even better in your hair.
Jewels
HBO’s Euphoria took incredible risks with their style choices throughout the series and brought bold choices like hair jewels into the light. Their work has sparked a trend of women utilizing the style in unique ways. Bring out your inner diva with a trail of pearls leading to a ponytail, a trio of gems to make your straight look instantly fabulous, or go full out with a bold Cher-Esque veil. We believe in you!
Statement Clips
Bold clips are simply just fun! They bring a cute, flirty element to every hairstyle. They can be simply for a fashion statement. They can serve a purpose and clip your hair up and out of the way. There is literally no reason to not get on board with this trend!
Side Part
The middle part has stolen the show for the past few years, but side parts are making a comeback! We’re big fans of changing up your part, too! It’s a simple way look a little more fancy at your holiday party.
Fan-favorite: Hats
Fall/winter basically screams “cute hats.” Baseball hats. Wide brim hats. Berets. Beanies. You name it, it works! Plus it’s our favorite way to keep our day six or seven hair going!

FrankenTYME: The Making Of The TYME Iron Pro
Hairstylists around the world are constantly hearing clients ask, “How do I make my hair look like that?” These stylists spend tons of time explaining to the people in their chair the curling method, explaining the benefits of quality products, and how effective blowdrying really is. Yet, when clients come back for their next appointment, they still ask.
Jacynda Smith, TYME CEO, couldn’t let that go. She wanted women to get that same boost of confidence they had when leaving the salon, on an everyday basis.
"I wanted people to be able to style their hair the way I was able to style it for them in the salon,” Smith said. “They either couldn’t use a flat iron to create curls or had trouble with curling irons.”
Smith’s experience with clients gave her just enough frustration and confidence that she decided to make a tool that would work for everyone. After a generous donation of styling tools from Capri Cosmetology School, the school where she earned her cosmetology license, Smith got to work.
"My goal was to help women create the styles they always wanted,” Smith said. “I felt there could be a better way and started working with my cousin.”
And thus, FrankenTYME was born! The first prototype in what would become the TYME Iron Pro was a concoction of different irons pieced and mended together. This stitched-together tool would become a revolutionary new styling tool. FrankenTYME combined the styling capabilities of four different barrel size curling irons and a straightener. Five tools all in one package.
“By utilizing the science of “where the hair cools is where it stays”, the iron heats the hair between titanium plates for a faster heat transfer and then cools on the rounded shape of the iron,” Smith said. “This heat transfer process is also what makes TYME curls last longer than hair curled with a traditional iron.”
These capabilities would not only change the way women look at getting ready but declutter their lives. Their bathrooms, traveling experience, and even time dedicated to getting ready would completely change. No more cluttered drawers, cabinets, and suitcases - just one tool: the TYME iron!

Get To Know Our CEO, Jacynda Smith
The entrepreneur mindset doesn’t come easy to all, but for Jacynda Smith it came as naturally as braiding hair. As a little girl in Colorado Springs, CO, Jacynda had a knack for making things beautiful. This quickly turned into her first entrepreneurial business when she started selling bracelets to her friends in fourth grade.
That mindset traveled with her across the world while she was living in Finland, creating a bag company in Toronto, CA, and traveling with her husband who was a professional hockey player, but her current enterprise developed in a little town meant to be a pit stop along the way.
In the heart of the Midwest sits the tiny little river town of Bellevue, IA where Jacynda found the time to mingle her passion for bringing beauty into the everyday lives of women and business. Her experiences in Iowa helped foster the original design for the multi-purpose tool we can’t stop drooling over, the TYME Iron. We had the opportunity to sit down with Jacynda, TYME CEO, to revisit that journey and how it has evolved since 2014.
Q: How did you end up in Bellevue?
J: When Dan (my husband) got injured playing hockey, his career was over. It was also the 2008 housing crisis so he couldn’t find work. My mom said, “Why don’t you go live in Iowa where it will be affordable and you’ll have a sitter for your kids while you go to hair school.” I was like “What are you crazy?” ...and then I moved here. A year later she said: “When are you coming back to Colorado?” ...and I said, “What are you crazy? I’m not leaving here.” In both instances she wasn’t crazy.
Q: You started your journey in the beauty industry as a hairstylist. What influenced you to develop the TYME Iron?
J: The beauty industry - for me - is very complex because I believe that beauty comes from inside. I really feel a beauty journey starts way further back for me. Hair was my first real venture into it, but I appreciate beauty from everywhere and every angle. I feel like I’ve always been an admirer of beauty in all forms, whether it’s houses and confidence in people or a kind smile. I appreciate beauty everywhere. I think my first experience was “How do I help people bring that into their beauty routine?” It was the struggle of watching everybody try to curl or try to recreate. People in the salon would always ask how to look a certain way. So I'm trying to teach them how to do that and they would struggle so hard to get the looks. They were trying to recreate it with a curling iron, but I was curling with a flat iron. They couldn’t get that technique down so I was like there has to be a way to make this easier for them, so I started dabbling in finding out how I could create it. I thought it would be an attachment, but it ended up being a whole iron.
Q: And you had no idea what it would be able to do from there right?
J: I had no idea what it was going to free up for women. When I gave it to Ariya and she was trying it out and she was like, “I can only get it to straighten.” I was like “What are you doing?” and so she showed me and I was like, “AHHHH IT’S A STRAIGHTENER TOO?! THAT’S AMAZING.” I was just trying to help women achieve the styles that I was giving them.
Q: When you were a little girl did you dream of working in the beauty industry?
J: No! I literally thought nothing for myself. I had no big hopes or aspirations or dreams. I literally thought like I was good at nothing. I was like “How do I just get by every day?” and I always felt like I was good at everything but not GREAT at anything, so I didn’t really know how to excel at something and really put an effort forth. I do know that whenever we would braid hair in class or something, it was very easy for me to do. I didn’t connect that something being easy for me wasn’t easy for everyone else. A big part of the journey is trying to figure out how to feel what is easy for yourself. Because when it’s right it's just easy. Or it’s worth trying.
Q: Ranging back across the past century, is there a beauty trend you would want to bring back? Why?
J: I’m obsessed with ‘70s hair! The different things that they would try...it was all over the map! If you had big afro hair, you would rock it and it was amazing, or you would be so proud of that and I love that! If you had really sleek amazing hair, you would rock that. And if you were really into a bouffant kind of look, you could do that. I love that in the ‘70s you were true to you.
Q: What is your advice for people looking to break into the beauty world?
J: Be true to you! It’s very easy to get lost in the beauty industry following trends instead of being true to what you’re about. Find your niche in it. The beauty industry is so big and so vast that you can find your niche somewhere.
Q: Be honest. What’s your favorite TYME product? You can only choose one!
J: The iron. If I couldn’t choose the iron, that’s hard. Upstaged is so versatile, but if I didn’t have the shampoo and conditioner, I wonder what Upstaged would be like. Upstaged is epic, but I couldn’t imagine washing my hair more often. That’s like asking me to choose between my children...sorry, I like them all. Ok...Power Couple! The freedom it provides in your life you can’t even match.
Q: Is there anything new on the horizon for TYME?
J: Our Obsidian Iron! When I first came out with the iron it was like a sea of black irons. Very boring, no fun in the iron world at all and I just wanted to break from that tradition. Now I think so many (brands) have gone so far that most of them don’t look good on your counter. There’s nothing more amazing than a sleek black iron with bling on it. I’m really excited to launch that iron.
Q: What styling product should every woman have in her arsenal?
J: Upstaged because of how versatile it is. It can enhance anyone's natural style.
Q: What else are you excited about right now?
J: With 2020, we’ve had to revisit and clear out all of our closets. I’m really excited to see the other side of people being a renewed sense of themselves. When you are more isolated and you go in and you clean out your closets, whether metaphorically or physically, you come out new. It’s all fresh and new. I’m really excited to see people interact when they can show their smiles again. We get to reconnect in a whole new way after everyone has cleaned out their closets and we get to show up as our newest truest self.
Q: How do you measure success?
J: One moment at a time. I think the best thing that I have found for feeling successful is being present in every moment. Making a certain amount of money is no better than the smile on my kids’ faces. Do you know what I mean? Enjoying every little win along the way and being present for that, not thinking about the future or the past is the most rewarding successful thing I have found in my life. You have to be present to receive the presents.
Q: Who is your biggest influence in the beauty industry? Or just in general? Why?
J: I have an odd person and that’s Gary Vee. He has done so much to help people recognize what's good about themselves that I don’t think anyone in the beauty industry has touched that. That amount of being able to recognize it within yourself and let go of all the social constructs that we normally recognize as beauty and success.
Q: What do you want your legacy to be?
J: That I brought a smile to your face at some point. Whether it’s you recognizing the beauty within yourself because of something or you having a smile because your hair looks good that day. If I brought a smile to your face then I’m happy. That’s enough for me.
Q: If you could share one piece of wisdom with the world, what would it be?
J: Take judgment out. That is one of the most freeing things I have ever done is start freeing myself from judging myself and others. I found that because I was so hard on myself all the time I was harder on others. Once I started being less hard on others, I started being less hard on myself. It's such a catch 22 that I don't think we usually connect. When we’re so judgemental about ourselves it starts reflecting out to the world. You start to just judge everything without realizing it. I appreciate so much in everybody else, but I always was knocking myself, and in turn, that would come out into the world. Alleviating judgment at every turn I can is a big thing. You start thinking, feeling, and doing everything in alignment instead of thinking one and saying another. When you take out the judgment you don’t pull one way or the other you’re just kind of in the middle and it makes life a lot easier!

Ground Rules
Rule #1:
Always use a thermal protectant when applying heat to your hair. We suggest the Upstaged Thermal Protectant. It is essentially a mousse, detangler, thermal protectant, a hair mask, and a texturizer all in one!
Rule #2:
Round brushes come in at the end of your blow-drying time. Hair should be nearly 70% dry before you even pick up your round brush. Your hair should feel cool to the touch before you get started.
Rule #3:
Rotate. Rotate. Rotate. We don’t suggest trying to brush tangles out with a round brush! Round brushes are meant for styling, not brushing. Grab a small section you’re looking to style and place it over the brush. Gently rotate the brush through the length of your hair. Be cautious with larger section sizes because they are harder to maintain and run a greater risk of tangling together.
Rule #4:
Keep your blow dryer pointed away from your roots. Reversing that angle will fluff up your hair cuticle creating tons of frizz.
Creating Your Look
Much like the TYME Iron, the styles you create with a round brush depend greatly on angles! Except these angles come from your blow dryer. Where your blowdryer is placed is the ultimate factor in what style you’ll end up with. We suggest investing in a blowdryer that comes with a condenser like the BlowTYME Hairdryer.
Jacynda said it perfectly in the video above, “Where the hair cools is where it stays.” So if your hair is cooling on the curve of the rounded brush, it will have a curl or wave to it, but if it’s cooling without even touching the brush, it will be straight.
Check out our different TYME approved methods to creating these different looks. And just as a reminder, your round brush should stay at the same angle the entire time you’re styling to keep consistency. Turn the heat up on your blowdryer and let’s get to work!
Looking for Less Volume?
Keep your blow dryer on the inside angle of your round brush. In a gentle and steady motion, rotate (see Rule #3) the round brush through your locks. This method will give you a soft and straight style.
Au Natural?
Keep your blow dryer at a 90-degree intersection with your round brush for a more natural look. This look will still be smooth with a very slight lift and just a glimpse of your natural wave.
Just a Little Bit of Volume?
Keeping your blow dryer to the outside edge of your round brush will give you volume throughout the entirety of the section you’re blow-drying. This method is ideal before styling a polished look like glam waves or an updo.
The Most Volume?
To get a sky-high blowout you’ll want your blowdryer to be blowing your hair back towards you underneath the round brush. Be sure to follow the curve of the brush closely and gently rotate it through your hair. When you get to the end of your length, tightly wrap your hair back into the round brush. Now rotate your round brush 90 degrees and *gently* unwind your locks. Voila! You just took the first step in DIY-ing a gorgeous blowout!

Prepare! Prepare! Prepare!
This is the key to making this sleek look last. Prep your hair with Upstaged Thermal Protectant. Upstaged is a strong and long-lasting product that adds an incredible scent, protects your hair and can double as a lightweight styling aid. Make sure to brush this evenly through the entirety of your hair. The TYME Iron runs from 300 to 400 degrees and a higher temperature will help you get the desired look on the first pass through your hair. A singular pass at a higher temperature creates less damage than multiple passes with a lower temp. Don’t forget that!
Work Your Way Up!
Unlike most TYME styles, when working with thicker textured hair, we suggest sectioning. Working from the nape of your neck up to the crown will be the quickest, most effective method to straighten your hair. This will give you the opportunity to trial and error a few pieces underneath, while still giving them the time to cool before making any “corrections.”
Your Brush is Your Best Friend
Grab your Detangler Brush and let’s dive in! Our TYME brushes are designed to handle the heat coming from the iron, so you can seamlessly work with each tool. Using your brush as a guide to keep your curls sprawled out will ensure heat is distributed evenly through your section of hair.
Pro Tip: Give each section a thorough brush through before straightening! This will help ensure you won’t hit any snags when passing through with the iron.
Lock It Down!
After you’ve made it through all your curls, there are a few optional steps to keep that sleek shine. Grab a bottle of SelfieTYME Hairspray and use as much or as little hairspray as you like, our’s is chemically created to be touchably soft! The finishing touch? Our TYMELESS Repair and Shine Spray. It is literally liquid gold. Packed with tons of vitamins and proteins, TYMELESS will help lock in hydration, thus preventing your hair from humidity, static, and frizz.
