If You Can’t Stand the Heat…Upstage It
Read Time: 1 min 52 sec Summer is upon us…the beach, the sun…the heat! Days are longer, skin is tanner, hair can get frizzier. And, while we love being outside more and looking and feeling healthier – our hair, not so much. It’s exposed to even more heat, wind, salt, and dry air. We sometimes rely more on our styling tools, so it’s time to upstage all this heat exposure, in one simple step, with one product. UPSTAGED Thermal Protectant is an incredible, multi-purpose, multi-benefit thermal spray that will not only protect your hair from any type of heat exposure (styling tools, intense sun), this product will replace the need for using mousse, detanglers, hair masks, and treatment oils. What’s in it? Created for all hair types, UPSTAGED is the superhero of thermal sprays. It’s formulated with Hydrolyzed Adansonia Digitata Seed Extract, a protein from the Baobab tree, also known as the “tree of life”. This protein helps address dryness, and other signs of aging (yes, hair ages, just like skin). It also helps increase hair strength, protect it from UV exposure and nourish strands from root to tip. Polymers add flexibility and manageability to hair without making it feel stiff. They act as anti-static agents, that prevent attracting dirt, product buildup, and flyaways. Aloe Vera adds softness and shine. How do I use it? Towel dry hair. Spray on and use a wide-toothed comb to distribute the product throughout your hair. A little goes a long way. If you will be using a curling or flat iron, we suggest completely drying your hair after spraying and before styling. TIP: Pop this in your gym or beach bag. Spray in after your workout where the hair is damp and blow dry in to refresh your hair’s style and scent. What makes UPSTAGED different? UPSTAGED can protect hair against heat styling tool temps of 572 degrees Fahrenheit (300 degrees Celsius). It’s safe on color or keratin-treated hair and is paraben, sulfate, and gluten-free. Most importantly, we do not test on animals. What can I expect? Our own CEO, Jacynda Smith uses UPSTAGED. “I created this product for all hair types. It is lightweight, with a fresh, sexy, and amazing fragrance and I spray it on towel dried hair right out of the shower. It adds shine and volume without making my hair feel sticky or weighed down. It looks and feels natural and my style lasts longer! It saves me, and will save you, both time and money.” TIP: UPSTAGED can be safely used on hair extensions. UPSTAGED is the perfect complement to our other TYME products. Make it part of your hair care regimen. Bring it on, summer! 4.05 fl. oz. $25 6 to 8 month supply, depending on use. Not All Shampoos and Conditioners Are Created Equal
Read Time: 2 min 33 sec If you have ever had a challenge with having an oily scalp, curls not holding, frizz, or limp hair you understand the struggles that so many women deal with every day. The issue starts in the shower! We totally understand the allure of purchasing a shampoo and conditioner based on the scent or a cheap price point. But when you get down to the facts, the ingredients are the most important factor to take into account when deciding which products to buy. 3 Ingredients We Avoid in Our Hair Care Line Sulfates The reason a lot of brands add sulfates is to create a lathering effect in the shower and to remove all the oil from your hair and scalp. The issue with this is it completely strips your hair of its natural oils. In essence, dehydrating your scalp which causes your scalp to overproduce oils. When your scalps oil production goes into overdrive your need to wash every day which causes your routine to go into overdrive! Sulfates can also dry or damage your hair over time, and may even contain carcinogens. Parabens A paraben is a preservative that is used to prevent the growth of fungi, bacteria, and mold in shampoos. The issue with parabens is they can cause irritation of the scalp, skin conditions, and allergic reactions. Are fungi and bacteria gross? Sure, and we don’t want the bad kinds on your scalp, but research shows that there are healthy skin bacteria which actually help improve your skin’s health. By eliminating Parabens and introducing a healthy haircare system that promotes your body’s natural oils these good bacteria are able to thrive and autoimmune diseases like eczema may be avoided. (Reference) Gluten Using gluten-free products may help keep your skin clear if you have eczema or a gluten allergy/sensitivity. Some researchers are looking into what the actual culprit of gluten sensitivity is. Is it the gluten protein itself, or pesticides which oversaturate GMO wheat products and can never be removed? Whatever the answer is, you will not have to deal with possible negative side effects of gluten in TYME’s product line. The Power Couple When Jacynda Smith (TYME CEO) was asked why she wanted to create a product line, she said that she was tired of using hair products that work against you by weighing your hair down, making your hair feel oily, and not holding a style. She set out to make a product line that worked for you and actually allowed you to use it less often than other brands. TYME Iron Pro FAQ
When we say, “Forget everything you know about curling,” we mean it! If you’re used to using hairspray or oil before curling with your previous tools, that is now a thing of the past! For best results, apply a lightweight thermal protectant, and that’s it!
TYME Iron Beginner's Guide - Part 2
Read Time: 3 min 36 sec
In the TYME Iron Beginner's Guide - Part 1 article, we introduced you to the TYME Iron and taught you how to prep your hair. In Part 2, we are discussing proper sectioning and teaching you the technique for curling and straightening your hair with the TYME Iron!
Check out our new guide with everything you need to get started effortlessly here. How To Section Hair and Hold The TYME Iron CorrectlyHolding the Iron Correctly
Start by picking up your TYME Iron. You always want to hold it in your right hand with your thumb behind the power button. This is going to be your hand position for both curling and straightening.
Get in the habit of setting your iron down with the curved side facing the counter. This will guard your counter and allow you to pick up the iron and use it without having to adjust.
Sectioning
To break the habit of using clips, which can be time consuming, we like to start in the very back by splitting your hair down the middle, and working your way forward. This allows you to cut down your curl time, and helps you go through your sections easier and without missing any strands!
When you’re grabbing your section, make sure to grab it vertically, long top to bottom. Keep your section small enough to fit inside the irons plates.
Prep your section by brushing it forward so it’s already laying in the direction we are going to move with the iron. You will get a much smoother curl all the way through.
When you put your hair in your iron try to keep it as fanned out as possible so it’s evenly heated and your curls will last longer!
How to Curl on Your Right Side
For the right side, start with the iron in your right hand, with your thumb behind the power button.
Start with cord end of the iron towards the floor and the curved side towards your scalp. When in this position your fingers should be in towards your scalp and thumb up towards the ceiling.
Gently close your iron, rotate back by turning your knuckles back then push forward with your iron keeping the tip of your iron up towards the ceiling. We like to think of this movement as a push towards your mirror instead of pulling down, forward, or out to the side.
Maintain a “rooftop line” (90º) angle to start. You can switch this up once you become comfortable with the technique to achieve different curls!
How much curl you get depends on how much you rotate your iron. A quarter turn is going to be loose, a half turn is more defined, and full turn is going to be a tight ringlet.
How to Curl on Your Left Side
For the left side, start with the iron in your right hand, with your thumb behind the power button.
The main difference between curling the right and left sides is that you will be starting with cord end of the iron towards the ceiling on your left side. As usual, the curved side will be towards your scalp. When in this position your fingers should be in towards your scalp and thumb up towards the ceiling.
Gently close your iron, rotate back by turning your knuckles back then push forward with your iron keeping the tip of your iron down towards the floor. We like to think of this movement as a push towards your mirror instead of pulling down, forward, or out to the side
Common Mistakes While Curling
Grabbing the iron backward, with your thumb behind the temperature lights instead of the power button.
Entering your section with the straightening side instead of the curved, curling side.
Using two hands to turn your iron as you would with a flat iron or traditional curling iron.
Using too much tension (closing too tight) when you curl.
Taking too thick of sections. (Start small, you can always grab larger sections once you are achieving the curl you want!)
Twisting or pinching your section instead of allowing it to be fanned out on the plates.
Straightening with the TYME Iron
Hold the iron just as you would when curling, in your right hand with your thumb behind the power button.
Instead of the curved side going towards your scalp, hold the iron horizontally and the exposed plate side closest to your scalp (but not touching it, the plates are hot!)
Start with manageable horizontal sections since that is the same direction your plates are laying.
Make sure your plates are laying flat, parallel to your hair section instead of coming in at an angle. The thinner the horizontal section, the closer to the scalp you can get.
You can roll the iron under to create a bend in, or out to create a bend out
If your hair is flat you can build a little volume by pulling the hair up and shaping the hair up and out at the scalp with your iron. (Time stamp 1:25 in “How to Straighten” video)
For thick or naturally curly hair we recommend leading your iron with a paddle brush.
Common Mistakes While Straightening
Starting with the exposed plates directly on your scalp. (Please remember the plates are hot!)
Clamping too hard when you first close your iron which can cause creasing.

The Benefits of Dusting Hair Cuts
Read time: 1 min 29 sec Have you ever been told you have to cut your hair every 6-8 weeks to maintain healthy hair? Getting trims this frequently may be a solution to getting rid of dry or split ends, but what about the hair in the mid-shaft that, if damaged, can cause our hair to look frizzy or unhealthy? If you think about your hair like a plant - when a plant dries out the leaves turn from green to dry and brittle brown. When you are trimming the ends, whether it’s from a blunt cut or through a dusting cut, you are in essence cutting off the brittle spot. If you continue to dry out the hair and don’t change anything in the routine the hair will continue to dry out and continue to be a challenge.Rather than chopping away at months of growth at your ends, dusting cuts allow you to get rid of the split ends that live through the mid-shaft of your length. Dusting hair cuts are great for anyone who is trying to conserve their length while maintaining healthy hair. This method can work on all hair types and lengths, but if you have very naturally curly hair it is easiest to do when your hair is blown out or straightened. How Dusting Cuts Work Gather a section that you can easily hold between your pointer and middle finger. Starting at the root, comb from underneath your section and flip the comb forward so your hair is bent over the top of the comb. You will then see all of the small split ends poking out from the section. Without cutting the section itself, cut off the hairs that are poking out so they are smooth and flush with the rest of the section. From this angle, you can see there can be very little to actually cut in one spot on the strand. Continue this method down the rest of the strand, and repeat where needed! We suggest talking to your stylist and allowing them to safely use this cutting technique on you:) For more tips and hair tutorials, follow us on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest.
5 Tips for Amazing Hair all Summer
Read Time: 2 min 49 sec Maintaining hair health and moisture can be challenging during the summer months. Pools, heat, and UV exposure can all work against you, so how do you get the most out of your style while still enjoying all summer has to offer? In this article, we will break down 5 tips to keep your locks looking luscious, all while saving you tyme and allowing you to enjoy fun in the sun ;) Using Products That Keep Moisture in Your Hair Keeping your hair hydrated is one of the most undervalued aspects of summer styling it will keep your hair performing it’s best. This affects almost every aspect of how your hair performs. From keeping your hair from frizzing in humidity to helping your hair maintain it's style. It is vital to use products that work to maintain moisture in your hair. The question is how will you know if you are using the right products to hydrate your hair? You will know because your scalp will not be overproducing oil to compensate for the lack of moisture in your hair. Meaning if you have to wash daily or even every other day because it looks or feels oily your products may not be keeping enough moisture in your hair. As a result, your scalp will produce more oil to try and hydrate the hair! Using the right foundational products like Pregame Shampoo and Showoff Conditioner that focus on hair health ensures that even with heat styling your hair will maintain it’s shine without becoming oily for days. Not Over Drying with Styling Tools When you dry your hair the right amount it will have a healthy shine without needing products to restore the shine that is often lost by over-drying the hair. Your blow dry time will be faster because it won’t hang onto moisture longer than necessary, and if your hair is thin it will help it feel full and have more volume. If you are using too much heat meaning over drying or overheating your hair you will know because it will lose its shine. The good news is every time you wash your hair you get the opportunity to start over and maintain the shine! Protecting Your Hair’s Dignity when Faced with Humidity Using the right shampoo and conditioner can completely change the game when it comes to your hair's reaction to humidity. If you are using a shampoo and conditioner that keeps your hair truly hydrated your hair will perform better in humidity. When hair is naturally curly and dehydrated and is exposed to humidity it will expand and grow bigger, it will do this to pull moisture from the air and absorb the moisture it needs. If your shampoo and conditioner are keeping your hair hydrated your hair will have the moisture it needs so it won’t be over reactive to the water the air provides. The result is shiny healthy hair that will maintain it’s dignity! Styling Your Hair on a Beach/Pool Day When you are planning a day by the water, wear your hair as close to its natural state as possible. If your hair is naturally curly enhance the natural curl. If it’s naturally straight, wear it straight. If your hair has natural wave keep loose waves in the style. Wearing it closest to its natural state helps if you get splashed because your hairdo won’t completely fall into chaos! It just may not look as polished. If you’re headed on a vacation and you feel like you have to choose one of these styles because you only want to pack one tool, you’re in luck because all 3 looks can be created with the TYME Iron and it comes with a handy travel heat sleeve so you can even create curls waves or straighten as you’re packing up to leave and can just pop it in your bag right away! Wearing a Hat with Curls Loose beach waves are always amazing with a hat on, the soft curls are the perfect feminine touch with any hat. You can create loose beachy waves using the TYME Iron in 5-10 minutes so you don’t have to worry about putting a hat on over curls that took you forever...because they didn’t! ;) For more tips and hair tutorials, follow us on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest.
10 Minute Summer Wedding Updo
Read Time: 1 min 21 sec
Updo hairstyles are typically thought as more formal or editorial. We wanted to take the idea of having your hair up for an event but making it fun, flirty, and soft. This is a great style for a summer wedding or even just a date night!
Elements of the Style
Soft Curls create movement in the hair.
Create Full Bun using hair from ears back.
Wrap Bun by twirling bun’s tail and pinning.
Soft Twist and petal hair from ears forward, then wrap and pin.
Optional to leave soft face frame pieces.
Create movement in the hair by forming soft curls this allows the hair to create a bigger “billow” and bigger silhouette so the round shape of the bun has substance. Soft curls also make the hair that may fall out of the “bun” look organic. Don’t over analyze each curl, this is just to create some texture in your hair before starting the updo.
Using hair from ears back, create a full bun with a medium to long tail. Keep the bun full, but you don’t want a huge loop in the bun so it sags. You can play around with the size of the bun to figure out what looks best with your hair texture and length.
Use the tail to wrap the bun. If you don’t have enough length to do one full wrap, try making the bun smaller and leaving a longer tail.
Using sectioned hair from the ears forward, twist the hair back and wrap and pin as you did with the tail of the bun. “Petal” hair from the twist by pinching and pulling small sections from the twist. Feel free to play around with how much you petal the twist to create a fuller or more defined twist.
If you have face frame pieces you can leave these down to soften the style, or add them into your twist. Play with this style and make it yours! Create this style and tag us on Instagram to be featured!
